I’m constantly impressed with the RF 100-400 for its weight advantage over the RF 100-500 L and the quality I can get.

Aside from the aperture differences and the weather-sealing, what else am I sacrificing by not using the RF 100-500 L? Has anyone done tests to compare the two on IQ? The RF 100-400 seems pretty good for a consumer lens.

Thanks!

I’m also impressed.

I wonder: are you satisfied also when you use it with x1.4TC ?

thx

I'm a big fan of the RF 100-400 too-- and I've also got the 100-500L and RF 600mm f11. They all fill a niche, but the 100-400 easiest to use and most versatile because of its friendly size and weight.

Hello Bramble9. You use the RF600 f11 with your R7 or R5 ? Do you think RF600 f11 is better than RF100-400 with x1.4TC ?

thx

Assuming both are used on a tripod I can't see much optical quality difference unless I look at more than 100% or greater magnification, and then yeah, the 600 f11 is very slightly better.  I don't pay much attention to corners though.  Also, I only use the 600 on tripod but often use the 100-400, with or without the 1.4xTc, while hobbling around.  The 100-400 is optically a very good lens.

The RF 100-400mm lens is awesome for landscapes, too. I use it all the time.

I have the RF 100-500 and bought the RF 100-400 as a backup for big wildlife trips.  The 100-500 is definitely better than the Rf 100-400,, but most people wouldn't notice at normal viewing distance.  Very sharp lens for the price and the weight is awesome.  I do find I need to up the contrast and sharpening a bit to come closer tothe 100-500, but overall worth the money.  I wouldn't hesitate to shoot the 100-400 if I didn't have the 100-500 available.  My main reason for the 100-500 is the sealing and rugged lens construction.  The 100-400 is great as a walk around for casual trips when you want to cut weight.  This is a hobby, but I mainly shoot outdoors and use the 100-500 because I don't want to worry about a little moisture or dust.
