Sharper images using ES with the 10-24mm WR?

I just picked up a new XF 10-24mm f4 WR yesterday and I have been taking a lot of random test shots around my home, (the weather is too cold and nasty for outside testing).  Very impressed with the build quality of the lens so far and based on my indoor shots it appears to be a keeper. However it appears to me that shooting with the electronic shutter produces consistently slightly sharper images than when using the mechanical shutter.

Is this a case of shutter shock affecting the image perhaps? My camera is the X-T2.

It's certainly possible, that's where you'd see it. I don't notice any sharpness difference between the shutters with my X-T2, but I rarely shoot below 1/60'.

Yup, it's possible. I've seen this with the 18-55 and 16-80 before. Have not noticed it with my 10-24, but I think there's a lot of sample variability when it comes to shutter shock and OIS.

Possible IMO & Proposal for a test

Yes that is possible that you introduce some shutter shock with the MS in a certain ss range.

I have potentially had this very occasionally with the X-T20 and the XF 18-55. I am not completely sure, but it is my hypothesis. I am also not sure what role floating lens elements play.

I have thought about a test, and this would be to put the camera on a hard surface (just lay down, no use of tripod screw mount), using a cable release, and comparing MS and ES at different ss. Use MF to keep the focus setting constant. I haven't done it yet.

Regards,

Martin

At 1/60 that is very possible.  It could result from the OIS also.  Run some test , first with MS and OIS on, then with OIS off.  Repeat with EFC and repeat with ES.

EFC does have an impact on the image but that usually doesn't show up until about 1/1000. However, the impact of EFC is related to the bokeh and with an F4 wide angle I'm not sure one would notice it.

After taking dozens of shots indoors with half using ES and half MS with all shutter speeds below 1/60 second I'm convinced I get more consistently sharp images using the ES with these slow shutter speeds.  Others may have a different experience with the 10-24 using a different camera other than the X-T2 with a different shutter mechanism. IMO this is not a serious problem with the 10-24,  but good to know.

Yes, it's highly likely a consequence of shutter shock.

I noticed that shutter shock can be a real issue at certain shutter speeds, with certain lenses and bodies.

I don't own the X-T2, but a X-T20, X-E4 and X-S10.

The X-S10 with the 16-80 is particularly prone to shutter shock for instance. It's actually so bad that I never shoot with the mechanical shutter anymore. I don't like surprises and I don't enjoy zooming on the photo after each shot to check whether it suffers from shutter shock or not. Since I only shoot with the electronic shutter, I haven't had a single instance of blurry picture.

It all depends if you are steady at slow speeds. with the 10-24 I can shoot MS tacksharp handhold at 1/4sec (50% tack sharp)

But ES makes things much better without the shutter shock.
