scanning 35 mm film with a G9x?

Greetings. This is probably the dumbest question ever asked but I want to "scan" my old 35 mm film. Currently the only camera I have is a Canon G9x. I was wondering if it would be possible with this camera and what else I would need.

Thank you,

Sci

You will need:

  • a macro lens that fits that camera.
  • a tripod or vertical stand
  • a light source (I tried an iPad but you might want a sheet of paper on it)
  • a film strip holder

You can buy a scanner that might make the process go faster depending on how you want to trade off between cost and convenience.

I want to "scan" my old 35 mm film.

Color negatives, B&W negatives, or slides? About how many total photos? How picky are you about the scan quality? How much would you be willing to spend to get what you need?

It is possible, but there might be better ways to go depending on your answers.

I didn't realize that the camera was a point and shoot.

You really need a macro lens.

The bit about the buying a scanner might be helpful except that the scanner is about as expensive as the G9x.

I have about 1500 color negatives and 200 color slides. I would like the best quality possible.

Thank you.

I don't think the best quality possible can be had with a G9X.

However, a decent second-hand interchangeable lens camera of 16MP or more, plus a second-hand macro lens, plus this type of gadget could provide very nice results. Inverting the negatives to provide good color could be tricky, though.

And there's always the option of a dedicated film scanner.
