Faulty front dial on M6ii

Just bought an M6ii this week, used, but in seemingly very good condition and for a good price.

However as soon as I unpacked it I noticed the front dial (the one around the shutter button) wasn’t working right ie it would jump settings back and forth.

Since then I have seen this is not unheard of with this model so I’d like to know how common this problem is as I don’t want to get another one if this is a really weak link.

I have an M5 and have never had a similar problem even though the dial looks of similar construction.

It doesn't matter whether it's a common problem.  If your camera isn't working properly, then it's defective.  Repairs on these cameras are not economical, as far as I know.  If it were me, I would return it immediately.

I have 3 other cameras that have dial issues.

1 is the mode dial

1 is the control dial

1 is the power switch

Anything that can get sweat in it and is used alot will wear out.

It is a PITA if you don't fix it.

As I clearly mentioned it does matter to me, as if it's a common problem I don't want to source another one which might also go wrong on me.

And I have of course returned it.

Meanwhile it would be good to hear from those with any experience.

You’ve probably seen this thread on this: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66476883

As far as how common, would be great to know. Seems that some people have it, but hard to know what %.

Would also be interesting to know if this happens to all units after several years (even if they’re unused, sitting in boxes), or new units are unaffected.

Yes I've seen that thread and others but thanks anyway.

It would be good to get some idea what causes it, dirt under the dial for example to see how easy a fix might be.

I have not heard of many instances of failure, but only Canon would truly know how prevalent.  I’ve taken about 100k shots with mine without a hitch.  I shoot in full Manual, so I use that dial constantly.

If mine were to go bad, I’d use Contact Cleaner on it, and if that didn’t work I’d replace the Top Plate with a Fleabay part.

And if that didn’t work I would buy another.  Love the M6ii that much.

Mine’s still does it, partially solved by swapping the front dial to aperture. when it jumps now it’s to wide open and so it’s merely annoying, when the dial was set to shutter speed it would jump to bulb and was very nearly thrown at a wall in anger

It is a common problem in that it is the most frequently reported failure mode for the M6 II in these forums.  A bad internal clock battery is probably the second most reported problem.

In terms of the broader global population, only Canon knows how frequently these cameras fail.  Odds are, if you bought a new body, it would likely be fault free.

Hi Jim,

Have you tried fixing it with the suggested methods of cleaning under the dial with dental floss or squirting contact cleaner into it?

That's interesting especially about the clock battery.

Is it just speculation that the newer models don't suffer from the dial problem? As I mentioned I've an M5 which has what looks like a similar dial and never had any issues with it.

I've sent the faulty one back and now bought from a dealer who offers 6 months warrantee. Fingers crossed

I have not seen any evidence to suggest that newer versus older copies are more or less likely to have the issue.  My guess is that it is a fairly rare and random occurrence.

Hi Dave, yes thanks, it worked for a week or so, twice, fingers crossed it’ll be 3rd time lucky

Is the battery problem due to the aging of the battery? Can it be solved by replacing the battery?

What battery problem? We are speaking here about faulty front dials.

I think you may have posted in the wrong thread.

I am the administrator of m62 posts in China.

Someone asked me why I have to redefine the time every time I turn it on.

I suspect it's caused by battery aging, but I'm not sure.

So I asked that person, hoping that he could give me an answer.

Because he said that this is the second most asked question in addition to the failure of the front wave wheel.:-|

Some "young" cameras have had the probkem.

Can it be solved by replacing the battery?

Theoretically, I think "Yes".  However, in the USA, instead of replacing the battery, Canon just swaps the entire camera for a refurbished unit.

Yaixi was replying to my post above where I mentioned the battery issue as being the second most common failure after the dials.
