Any experience with Canon shop?

Hi

I'd like to preorder the Canon R8, since it seems to be tought to have it, I saw severals options ... I am in Canada

  • well known shop (Gosselin) in a big city, having several stores ... and also more than ×25 R8 preordered at the country scale
  • well known shop (Photo Service) in a big city, sells camera but is more focus on services ... no preorder for the R8 for the moment
  • Canon website ... where the R8 is "in stock"

I tend to prefer official Canon website, hopping to be in the first batch, but is anyone had issues with Canon website and their "in stock" information?

It won't be the first time an "in stock" item became "backordered" even after your "purchase" it, I am not talking about Canon, but in general.

Any advice?

Re: Any experience with Canon shop?

No issues new or refurb from Canon direct.

Plus, Canon's customer service on the phone ( had an order that was processed on my card but didn't show online in my account), is truly excellent.

Buy if you're on the fence or really don't like the camera, other stores have more generous return policies.

Re: Any experience with Canon shop?

For me it’s always been hot or miss.  One item I had to wait 2 to 3 months for when it was originally stated as being in stock.  Other orders were mysteriously cancelled days after placing them for no reason provided

Then there were the good orders where everything went as expected.

I prefer to stick with Amazon with their guarantees in place for delivery

Re: Any experience with Canon shop?

For Canon Europe, the webshop is a minimum viable product, it does what a webshop needs to do, but barely. You can't make changes to an existing order, not through the website nor through the phone.

That generally isn't an issue, you can cancel the order and start a new one. But in the case where you ordered an in-demand item like the R5 right after launch, cancelling the order puts that single R5 they had back on the website. And there are a lot of people refreshing that website at those times

Since every Canon website is run through the local daughter company, experiences with other regions will differ significantly.

I still prefer to shop at brick and mortar shops for cameras, but in some cases, like my R5, the Canon website is the only legit option to get things without a huge markup.
