CPS will change in near future…
1

Hi everybody.

I got a newsletter where canon said that they will change my CPS account. In future they will charge for their service🤬.

They say that CPS members who are not professionals, or who do not need the professional service, can choose to be a member of an exclusive Canon Club🫣☹️

I think about to sell my gear.

What do you think?

Why would you sell your gear? Canon is most certainly still going to offer optional extended warranty packages on purchases. They arent going to make you pay for warranty service, only services outside of warranty.

The change seems to reflect the original intent of the program itself, supporting businesses and career photography in fields that would actually need regular service and repairs, expedited, to keep businesses operational.

It’s certainly somewhat disappointing, and I suspect it’s a cost saving measure, but so far in 20 years I’ve not really needed the current CPS benefits as an amateur. So whilst I currently have Platinum status, losing it is not too concerning.

Interesting move by Canon. When I first joined CPS back in the '80s I had to provide magazine "tearsheets" and other such proof of being in the business. Then it all changed and centered around how much gear you owned. Frankly, in all of these years, I've only used the service a few times.

Of course, it's also a matter of appreciation. I'm already into Platinum status.
In the last few months I had to realize that my membership points were decreasing for inexplicable reasons and were changed from Platinum to Gold status before I bought the RF 400 2.8.
It was a unique selling point of Canon - at least as far as I know - to offer corresponding added value via the service.
As a financially strong private owner I’ll have no access to this theoretical service in future.
That is regrettable.
Especially since sensor cleaning and a careful, quick repair should be a matter of course in this price range anyway and you shouldn't be relieved of paying any extra money.

On the question of why I would sell my stuff.
Well, I am at least considering it.
I get the impression that Canon only values you as an entrepreneur. I, with my equipment of about 25k euros, am just second class and not able to benefit the new strategy - at least that's the first impression.

Sometimes it is funny to read what arguments are found for the manufacturer. Ever thought about the fact that it is precisely not the target group that has brought Canon to where they are now. Or is Canon only for professionals anymore?

Could be a cost saving strategy. But I really don’t think that there is a need to cut the costs by reducing the service.
I think the profit for Canon last Year was not too bad, isn’t it?!

Was the newsletter you received exclusive to Platinum members? This is the first I've heard about this; I'm CPS Gold, even though my equipment points make me Platinum upgradeable. Most of my CPS usage has been expedited repairs, cleaning, and equipment evaluation loans.

I'll be sorry to lose CPS access, but, for the amount I use the service, they'll be losing some profit, and I'll be gaining $100/year and some inconvenience.

This is a little puzzling since they just renewed my membership for 2023 a couple of weeks ago.

I don't think so (can't tell, I'm also on platinum).

But note the CPS rules are different in US and Europe. The newsletter was from Canon Europe.

Re: CPS will change in near future…

I'm a CPS Gold in the US and I think it was $100 or $120 for the year.

I've only used it's services twice since 2017 a cleaning when I was near a repair center and I did an evaluation loan with the R3 last December that was a big reason I bought it, not sure I would've bought it without trying first.

I can understand them cutting the service down to working photographers. I'm just a hobbyist and don't really need the quick turnaround on service or loaner gear typically but I pay for the CPS because it would be nice to get that service if I did need it.

I have platinum membership, by virtue of the shedload of Canon gear I have bought over many years.
No way am I going to pay for this.  A few months ago I needed my R5 and 5DIV repaired, after being damaged on a wildlife trip (not being as weather resistant as Canon would like you to believe).  The cost in total was £2000.  Membership would have saved me £400, not much more than the annual subscription cost. I have never before broken my cameras in 20 years of Canon DSLR ownership, not do I plan to trash my cameras every year: it cannot possibly be an economically sensible to pay this subscription annually.

A very disappointing cash grab from Canon. Are they really struggling that much?

You're actually thinking about selling your gear and leaving the Canon ecosystem simply because CPS may be changing their membership policies?  IMO that's an incredibly silly and ridiculous reason, but to each his own, I guess.
