R7 flash question
1

I don't shoot flash much, but I have noticed some interesting choices the camera has made for ISO with flash. Example below: I shot one of my daughter and two fellow cosplayers at a local convention. I bounced the EL-100 behind me in a corner. The result was pretty good, but I noticed the camera choose ISO 4000 for the shot. I was using P mode, to keep it simple. My RP never selected any ISO higher than 1600 with flash, but I noticed a couple of weeks ago, in M mode, 1/200 a second, I got a flash photo at ISO 6400. Is there a new flash system being used by the R7? Not complaining about the results, but I am curious.

All my Canon flashes work fine. It is just the high ISO choices the camera selects that have me curious

In P Mode, the camera is likely exposing for the ambient light level (or close to it).

If you want more control, best to use full Manual.

Coming from 7D, 7D2, and 5D4 I found a similar situation with my new R7.  I had two flash shots that came out with ISO 6400 when on Auto ISO and I wasn't sure how that happened.  I finally figured it out - on the other 3 cameras turning a flash on would switch the ISO to 400 by default.  On the R7 it does not set the ISO to any specific value when a flash is turned on, rather it uses what ever is needed for the background to get correct exposure without the flash.  On the R7 you have to explicitly set the ISO to the value you want for the flash exposure.  Just something new to remember and old habits to break.

Not a bad pic at all!

I'd pick the ISO when I am bouncing a flash. Or as had been commented by others, go full manual. The EL-100 works great with both my R6Mii and the R7, btw.

Yes, P mode tries to expose the background correctly too. Which it succeeded with, lookinig at the picture.

If you use M mode, you can select if you want the background darker and thus use a lower ISO.

The exposure does look nicely balanced, and the tiny flash did a commendable job considering I bounced it behind me. I will keep this in mind when I am shooting flash, and go with M, 1/100th and ISO 800 or thereabouts.  The R7 does have that handy dedicated ISO button, after all.

Re: R7 flash question

The advantage of a mirrorless is that you can immediately see what the background far away will look like. Not while focusing, though.
