R5: keeping EVF open

Is it possible to keep the viewfinder of my R5 open all the time (ready to view and shoot); and if so, then will that hurt my sensor?

Yes in the yellow menus you can program the sensor to do that and LCD for how long you want to to stay on. There are all type of options.

No, it won't hurt the sensor.

It won’t hurt the sensor, but it will use more battery power, and the camera will run a bit hotter, which may be an issue with low light/long exposure images.  Maybe neither of these are an issue for you.

Re: R5: keeping EVF open

As Drsnoopy says, the EVF is very battery intensive, much more so than the LCD.

With my R5, provided the camera is powered ON, the EVF functions instantly when I bring my eye up to it, however, you would have to set Auto Power to Disable to prevent Start-up delay, and that would also use up battery power, but likely, not as much as continuous EVF.

Of course, with an external power source, or adequate spare batteries not a problem either way.

One other thing to consider is the start-up time from sleep, when touching the shutter button to wake the camera. I’ve found this is quicker if you put the camera in flight mode, i.e. both Bluetooth and Wireless are turned off. With quicker wake-up and eye activation of the EVF, you may find you don’t need to set the camera/EVF to always active.

Re: R5: keeping EVF open

I was doing a little experimenting last week. I set my power savings up like this. The LCD shuts off in 5 seconds but the viewfinder is not on because after you pull the camera away from your eye it flips to the LCD. The IS does not shut off but it does not use much power.

When I bring the camera back to my eye the EVF wakes up almost immediately. If you let the camera power down you need to press the shutter or menu to wake it up and there is a delay.

This is with my R7 but I'm sure the R5 has the same. You can keep the EVF on all of the time but it has the greatest drain on the battery. More than the LCD. Hope this helps.

I left this at the factory settings.

Re: Forgot to say

Since I don't shoot video I mapped the movie button to put the camera to sleep but I'm sure there are other buttons available for that.
