Do Fuji cameras (X100V) come from the factory with shutter actuations from testing?

I have a X100V new and I've already put actuations on the shutter so I don't know what it had from the factory new but the count seems high for what I've shot.  I don't have access to it right now to check if the image numbering matches the shutter counter.  I was told by fujifilm USA tech support that the X100 series does 1 actuation for turning on and one for turning off since the leaf shutter opens and closes on power on and off.  I haven't verified this first hand.  Also something about using first curtain mode clocks in 2 shutter actuations per photo.  Not sure about other non photo taking camera functions that might also increment the shutter counter.

According to the manual "Other actions may also increment the counter, for example turning the camera off, changing the viewfinder display selection, or choosing playback mode."

Last week, a friend who traded in a Nikon Z30 was told by a very big UK retailer of used equipment, 'shutter actuations on a mirrorless didn't matter in comparison to a DLSR' where there are more moving parts.

They only list actuations on used DSLRs on their website.

A couple of points.

1. The X100V reports shutter counts in increments of 500.

2. There are several actions which will cause a shutter actuation, but a lot of mirrorless do two Mechanical shutter actuations per photo. Here is how it works:

- Shutter is open so the sensor can see through the lens.
- Taking the photo involves closing the shutter, opening to start the exposure, and closing to stop the exposure.
- Shutter opens again so you can see through the lens again.

So each photo is close, open, close, and open. This has been true since the X-Pro1.

I'm not sure how electronic first curtain affects this, but the X100V doesn't have one because the shutter is in the lens. It's not a selectable shutter type like it is in my X-T5.

4. Assuming the camera is new, does even 50 shutter counts matter in a camera that can reliably take hundreds of thousands of photos.

Only if they use an electronic shutter, the mechanical shutter is the same whether DSLR or mirrorless.  The DSLR also has a mirror assembly, but that doesn't mean a mirrorless cameras shutter cannot wear out after a few hundred thousand true actuations.  That said, the X100 is a leaf shutter and counts actuations differently as a poster before me pointed out.

They only list actuations on used DSLRs on their website.

I leave mine on ES for most things that don't need MS, mainly because I shoot a lot of bursts, and after three years my shutter count is only 15800. Now that I have an XT5 for those situations I'm leaving mine set to MS.

i had my x100v for a year and my shutter count was 0 when I sold it lmao. I mostly also shot on ES mode. no idea how this works really.

That shouldn’t be possible according to the manual if simply turning it on/off counts as 1 actuation.

Sounds to me like there is a difference between "shutter actuations" and pictures taken.  It may be that most are mistaken in thinking they measure the same.  Any time the shutter opens or closes - counts as actuation even I'm an image is not shot. A actuation is anytime the shutter is directed to move my the camera.  Since taking an image requires the shutter to open and then close that that could as two actuations.  In reality a mirrorless requires the shutter to close, when the shutter is pressed and the charged dumped so the sensor can record the image.  Then the shutter opens and closes to take the image.  Finally the shutter opens again to supply the VF with the next potential image.

So it is important to know how Fuji counts these movements of the shutter in its statistics.  I'm not sure they tell us.

Selling used, if someone is contacting me and stressing about a few thousand actuations, I tell them do not buy my camera. It can only mean they want new for used prices. On the other hand, I understand wanting new for new prices.  That said, expecting 0 actuations is a bit much.

Has anyone here ever experienced an X-series camera failing due to high shutter count? If anyone has, please shout out, because my impression is that I've never heard it actually occur, and it's always good to check if I'm wrong about something.

That is really inaccurate.  Mirrorless cameras (accept the Z9) have mechanical shutters just like an SLR.  The only lack a mirror.  All shutter mechanisms wear out eventually.  Although the only people likely to encounter such limits are pro sports shooters firing thousands of images per day every day.

If you are worried about the wear and tear of clicking the shutter button, use electronic shutter or use a sketch pad and pencil.
