Re: Ever packed anything inside your big dome port?

In trying to squeeze all this dive and camera gear into (only) two suitcases, one of them a Pelican, I'm trying to find any space I can.
My Pelican suitcase is basically full at this point, but it only weighs 42 pounds. I have almost zero space left to carve out for another object as I need some padding in there, but I have a problem. None of the four 8-inch strobe arms are in the Pelican. (Along with three more strobes, but that's another issue.)
Now I can easily find room for four small strobe arms, but the reason they aren't already in there is due to the Stix floats on them. (6 of them, and I have a 2 more spares).
The problem is where to put the Stix so I can have all the parts I need to put together my rig in a single suitcase.
Which brings me to that mouth-watering amount of empty space within my 230mm dome port. I've never put anything in there, though I've thought about something like socks or underwear.
I'm considering finding some soft bags, putting the Stix floats inside, then fitting that bag inside the dome port. My concern, of course, is something rubbing on the inside of the dome and scuffing it, but in this case that seems a remote possibility.
Comments? Experiences?
I don't think you can guarantee those clothes to be dust free. And dust or scratching on the inside is a much bigger deal than the outside, and harder to fix due to the 120mm port opening. You have the benefit of it being glass, but I think the benefit is too small to be worth any compromise here.
strobe arms are indestructible. They go on the lateral pockets of my long dive gear roller next to the fins. The floats are removed from the arms for packing efficiency. Though how many do you need? With the WA on the R5 housing, I barely need them. (I do have the benefit of 1" diameter Aquatica 12" arms floaters. that might equate to one cube each.
Are you putting the housing in the pelican, or carrying it in the nauticam housing bag? I carry on the housing, being the highest value component. It's my personal item. For my main carry-on, I have the R5 body and the lenses, and a few of the other $$ components.
This harder to do for 1. With 2 people, the dive gear, clothing, and camera gear generally fits for 3 pieces of luggage...plus a pretty hefty carry-on. In moving to the Pelican approach, it will be 4 pieces, but more compliant carry-on and less stress about hitting 50lb limits.
