What should I buy???

Hi all, I have a 50D, and am looking for an upgrade to a very professional level - full frame would be best.... I am not sure what to do... I have a lot of EF lenses, but nothing very professional like the L like lenses,,, however I still have a lot of lenses.... I was looking at the new R line..... but just found out that the RF and EF and not the same mount..... So angry!!!!!!! SOOOO should I just quit EF and start building an RF collection and buy the R8 (Or whatever) , OR stick with the EF and buy an 5D-M4...….. …. please let me know your opinion..... any help or advice would be greatly appreciated:-)

Buy an R camera and use your EF lenses with an adapter until you get a chance (or choose) to switch over to RF lenses.

You can use EF lenses on RF cameras. Canon makes several adapters, but the simplest and least expensive one will do. Very easy,  mostly works great (some third party lenses may be glitchy under some circumstances and very old Canon lenses may not be able to keep up with very fast frame rates). I haven’t had any problems.

Re: What should I buy???

I got into R from 5D4 more than 2 years ago and still have more EF lenses than RF lenses. So one can certainly take the time with the transition.

When you're ready you'll also be able to consider lenses that you can't get on EF, such as the relatively inexpensive but capable RF 800 f/11.

Move from the 50D to any R should be a pretty good upgrade.

In general EF lenses tend to work great adapted to RF mount camera's using the standard EF-RF mount adapter. In many cases you can even get more out of it due to more consistent autofocus. There is really no reason te be angry.

Would be good to mention what EF lenses you have. It is then better to give an advice on what camera to look at : FF or APS-C, basic, advanced or pro.

You can buy any R body you want and then get an Canon EF-RF adapter. You're good to go. No need to switch lenses just yet.

As others have said, you can use your EF lenses seamlessly on an R camera. There's no performance or IQ hit at all (the adapter is just electronic, with no optics). In fact, many EF lenses work better on R cameras than on EF mount cameras. It's also not uncommon for R cameras to be sold in deals which include an adapter (I'm getting the R6II with adapter thrown in for free).

Buy a R5 plus adaptor. Good condition used cameras with dealer warranty now coming down in price.

I only have 1 RF lens - and good number of EF lenses.

No requirement at all to buy RF lenses unless you have gear acquisition syndrome or a very specific application in mind - like 28-70 f/2 or super sharp 50 f/1.2 / 85 f/1.2 - or very dark telephotos float your boat like the 800 f/11.

EF lenses on a R5 in effect are just as good unless ultra pixel peeping - except for odd ones which are a little sub par like the EF 50 f/1.2

Re: What should I buy???

I would look at the R its not the best but better than a few others a good starting point. There are 3 different ef-rf adapters. The std one about $100 and the control ring one at about $140 last time. The 3rd is a filter adapter, if you use a filters it might be worth checking out.

I bought the R on its release and still have it, have a strong attachment to it. I also picked up the R6 because the R is VERY good at portraits and landscapes but not things that move. I also have the first two adapters listed above.

One of the really cool things about the R system is the control ring. At front of each lens is a control ring that you can assign to just about anything via the body. This makes the control ring adapter sorta cool. The only problem is you must remove your hand from the lens and move back to the control next to the body. EVERY time I did this I lost my comp. YES I know another one of those damn first world things.

It took me a bit over 2 years to convert my EF lenses to RF but it was worth it. With the RF bodies and lenses focus is perfect every time EXCEPT when I screw up With the EF system on the critical shots, I always took 3 shots just to make sure, goes back to film days.

Let me add that Canon has a line of inexpensive lens that are great for the money.  I have moved over to them for the weight saving and replacement cost if lost of dropped.  I only have one L now the rf 70-200 f4 which I will keep for ever

I'm giving an another vote for getting a R-series camera body and adapter. I don't have a single RF mount lens so far, but all my EF lenses work just fine on R7 with the adapter.

As a bonus you can still use your 50D as a spare camera with them. I'm happily using both the 5Dmk IV and R7 myself.

Re: What should I buy???

First, I suggest you rent the camera model you are interested in and use your existing lenses on it.  This way you will know exactly how your EF lenses will perform.  The typical case is that EF lenses perform the same, or better, on R cameras than they do on DSLRs.  I will likely end up buying the R8 but will rent one first to know for sure it is the camera I want and/or need.
