Belt/waist pouch to fit the 10-24?

My basic hiking setup is now the combination of the 10-24 and the 16-80. One or other will obviously be on the camera, and the other I’d like to have available without taking off a backpack, by way of a pouch mounted securely to the waist belt of the backpack. The 10-24 (hood on) is the deciding factor, as the 16-80 with the Haoge hood that I use comes up just a little smaller. A close fit for the 10-24 will be fine for the 16-80.

I just received a Think Tank Lens Case Duo 20 that I ordered online thinking it would be just the right size, but actually it’s somewhat too large. The internal diameter is listed as 10.8cm and the hood of the 10-24 comes up at 9.8cm, which I’d wrongly thought would be a good fit. In reality it it’s held snugly at all. So I’m looking for an alternative.

The requirements are:

  • A snug fit for the 10-24 with the hood onbut of course not so snug that I can’t get it out
  • A belt loop that is secure (would prefer sewn-in at both ends to half-Velcro, but it’s not a deal breaker given the next point…)
  • At least one small loop (ideally more) that will take a carabiner, so that when I take the backpack off the pouch doesn’t go sliding off and rolling down the hill
  • Some degree of weather resistance is always a bonus

The smaller Duos are all clearly too narrow, otherwise they would be the obvious choice. There are others from Think Tank, LowePro, JJC and presumably more, but finding the Goldilocks size is obviously a challenge, especially when purchasing online.

Anyone got any good recommendations for this specific lens?

Search on Amazon for “camera lens case small” or such. For example, I found this:

https://www.amazon.com/Pouches-Camera-Pentax-Olympus-Panasonic/dp/B07Q4RXZ9Q

Case BL-003: Dimension--Inner size: 3.35 x 4.53 inch of the diameter and height.

You may get further input on the Accesories forum, like here https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4614186#forum-post-65697952. Chris 222 has valuable recommendations on packing in general on the same forum.

Re: Belt/waist pouch to fit the 10-24?

I found something which looks like it should do the job, at least until I can find something better.

A climbing chalk bag. In this case, a Montane Finger Jam. Cost £10.

It’s a good fit for the 10-24 with hood (not quite as snug as I’d like, but fine, and much better than the Lens Case Duo 20). No padding, but a tough exterior material and a decent fleece lining give it adequate protection as long as I don’t smash it into a rock, and unlike the usual semi-rigid lens pouches it packs down pretty small when not in use. The drawstring opening doesn’t quite close fully (the resulting hole is maybe 2cm in diameter) so it’s not weatherproof. Comes with a basic removable waist belt which passes through two loops on the back, which can be used for a couple of small carabiners instead.

I use the kata lite 431 DL, I've had it for years, it's an excellent and robust bag with a strong belt loop and detachable rain cover, the shoulder strap is also detachable. I attach it to my bergen belt and carry small lenses or sometimes the 18-135mm or 16-80mm, the 10-24mm will comfortably fit in it, either horizontally or vertically.

You probably know this, but the B&H website is excellent for product research. I believe it will let you filter on interior bag dimensions. I’ve found it to be accurate and quite useful.

Let us know if you find anything beyond your temporary solution. I have the same need and have been using a drawstring bag that came with a tripod ball head. Only on certain outings, but when I need it, I need it, and something better would be a welcome addition to the kit.

Tamrac Arc lens cases

I used the Tamrac Arc lens cases and am happy with them. They are my go to when hiking/backpacking/biking. I have all three models, but my medium sized one is discontinued and the new medium is 1.5" longer.

The 1.1 fits the 10-24 quite well. With the stock lens hood on forwards, it fits pretty much exactly length-wise,

Lens hood on forwards.

and with the lens hood reversed, there is a little vertical play. I solve that by putting a small micro fiber cloth that I'd be packing anyways in the bottom, but a piece of CCF from a camping mat or whatever would serve the same purpose. Forwards or reversed, the girth of the lens hood keeps the lens pretty securely in the pouch width-wise. without the hood, there would be a little play. The 1.1 size also fits the 16-55 perfectly, but the lens hood needs to be reversed to fit.

Here's the various pouches(and the Tamrac waist belt I used when biking or day hiking with my waist-strapless daypack.

2.4 fits the 50-140 or 100-400, both with a little bit of leeway length and width-wise. 1.1 fits the 16-55 or 10-24. 1.3(now 1.6) carries the 70-300, can also fit it with the 1.4x tc attached. The newer 1.6 is 1.5" longer than my 1.3, and so could probably now carry the 50-140 more securely than the 2.4, but would leave a lot of extra vertical room with the 70-300.

There is a little loop on the top if you wanted to secure it with a caribiner. The velcro straps that go over the belt are pretty secure tho, so even without, I don't think you'd have a problem with them sliding off the waist belt past the buckles.

The fabric it fairly weatherproof, but I would not say the zippers are exceptionally so. I've definitely found the insides to be damp(not dripping wet, just general dampness) if I've got caught out in the rain for an extended period, and would want my lens in plastic bags if that were a possibility. I just stuff a couple of the thin produce bags in the bottom for using if I think it might rain a lot.

My 10-24 lives in one of these. It’s attached to my Hazard 4 camera bag with the Molle attachment.
