Face+Tracking AF + Servo in M6II

On the M5, switching to Face+Tracking AF automatically changes AF from One-Shot AF to Servo-AF. Moreover this can all be accomplished by turning the function wheel one notch. How do I configure the M6 II to go from One-Shot AF with Spot AF to Servo AF with Face+Tracking with one flick? Because I haven't figured out how to replicate this M5 setting on the M6 II, right now to accomplish the above procedure I have to change AF mode followed by changing AF method.

No, that doesn't work. Custom modes on the M6 II also do not allow for associating a particular AF mode with an AF method as in the M5.

.

Again, to be clear, what I seek is the following: the ability to switch between [AF Spot method & One-Shot AF mode] to [Face+Tracking method & Servo AF mode] with one press or one turn.

You can assign AF method to button

Yes, yes, of course. But that's not what I am seeking.

I don’t think you can do it. 2 button presses might be the minimum. I have a button assigned to switch between one shot and servo, but keep the camera in servo 99.9% of the time. I have another button assigned to AF method, and switch between spot and tracking regularly.

Hi, prof. I am afraid your are right; it can't be done. Which is a shame and a step back from the M5 which, with a single one-notch turn of the function wheel, takes one from [Spot AF & Single-shoot AF] to [Face+Tracking & Servo AF]. Oh well.

.

I am also getting more unsharp images from the M6 II (relative to the M5) which I attribute to a combo of i.) Less stable hold compared to the against-the-eye-bridge bracing of the EVF on the M5, II.) Higher Mpix and/or III.) shutter shock. TBH, i far prefer the ergonomics and shooting experience of the M5 and shooting through a viewfinder, optical or electronic.

.

What would be brilliant, though, is an FF RF body like the M6 II with a pop-up EVF instead of and where the pop up flash resides.

I get excellent result by using Fv and auto ISO and keeping high enough shutter speed.

Back to basics then (you may be doing some of these):

  1. Slip the EVF on the M6ii if that’s your preference. Your choice DC1 or DC2.
  2. Test for shutter shock. See if that’s a factor (and with which lenses and SS range).
  3. Use Spot AF with Servo. I get close to 100% keepers (AF-wise).
  4. Use Back Button AF. It obsoletes One Shot AF (lift thumb to lock focus).
  5. Skip Face Tracking unless subjects are very close.  Spot AF is faster and stickier.
  6. Shoot at fast enough SS to get the shots you want.
  7. Shoot RAW and process with DxO Photolab 6. You’ll gain 2 stops over SOOC jpegs.
  8. Shoot small bursts (“Poor Man’s IS”). Cherry-pick the best (one is always sharper).
  9. 7 FPS works really well for me.
  10. Use the “Twist Grip” hold (principle of Isometrics/ opposing forces). Very stable.
  11. Turn OFF Exposure Simulation in dark environments. AF improves.
  12. When it’s extremely dark, try One Shot AF instead of Servo. AF improves.
  13. Shoot with the sharpest lenses possible. You don’t want to sharpen noise.
  14. The fast primes are proven winners.

See if these can help you out. They do for me.

Best of luck!
