January Wildlife
3

Here's a mixture of wildlife photos I took in last month in January. Despite the cold rainy and cloudy weather I managed to get outdoors to take pictures.

Photo No. 1 - We start off with showing a squirrel.

Photo No. 2 - Again....

Photo No. 3 - And again....

Photo No. 4 - We see a male wood duck in cloudy weather.

Photo No. 5 - Again...  Taking this in cloudy weather gives them a different look.

Photo No. 6 - Ah. a couple in love....

Photo No. 7 - It was so dark when I took this.  I didn't see them again at this location in sunny conditions.  But I'll keep looking.

Photo No. 8 - Now, it's a little brighter.

Photo No. 9 - Does anyone know the ID of this duck?

Photo No. 10 - Those wood ducks were so afraid.  On another sunny day, I finally got a lot closer, but not this time.

Photo No. 11 - These nutria swim kind of like crocodiles on the surface, but they are only plant eaters.

Photo No. 12 - We see some male Lesser Scaup on a nicer day.  I liked the reflections on the water.  I hope you liked the series.

Hi Digirame,

Excellent pictures of your Wildlife, love photo 2, squirrel posing for you.

My Guess for photo 9 is a Gadwall.

The one below is a male and I think yours is too.

Dig,

I loved this picture. I just imagine the pickup lines running through the head of the trailing duck.

Thanks.  I think you got it...yes...a male Gadwall it is.

January Wildlife - Thanks

Thanks.  They often travel together as we see in that picture, but not always.  The male wood ducks will fight other male ducks, to defend or protect their female mate from others.  I see it often.  The male duck swims very fast towards the other male with its beak extended and appears to be ready to bite if given the chance.

Road Trip
2

I made another road trip to see a Polar Plunge this past Friday and Saturday. Here's some photos I posted on the M forum. I took these with my mirrorless camera.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/66878427

Along the way, to and back from the event I also took lots of pictures from the car while we were moving. Here's some of them. I don't know if you find this interesting or not. If you do, please let me know and I'll make an effort to take more of them as I travel. I'm the passenger and most of the time I had to take the pictures through the car windshield and glass. The shutter speed has to be relatively fast.

If you would like for me to show more Polar Plunge photos too, please let me know. I may show them anyway, but I like to get your feedback. It was the first event of the year and we did not have any rain. Yay! I also found some neat food delivery robots after the event at a university. It was a lot of fun.

Photo No. 1 - This is the town of Gaston under cloudy skies as we drove towards the event.

Photo No. 2 - I thought this was a neat house on a hill. I am not sure what crop they grew here at this farm.

Photo No. 3 - We got to see a red barn.

Photo No. 4 - ....and a white one too.

Photo No. 5 - It was so dark that a color image almost looks black & white.

Photo No. 6 - We see a tree that was trimmed for the power lines.

Photo No. 7 - When we left the area of the event, we did see a little bit of sun.

Photo No. 8 - Right after I took the image above, I saw this jogger.

Photo No. 9 - We are now back looking at these trees again that were trimmed. At this point we were starting to get some sprinkles on the windshield. I just took this moments before the rain.

Photo No. 10 - The rain now stopped. This house looks like it's under renovation. At least I hope so, as parts of it looked in need of it.

Photo No. 11 - In Carlton, this might be a storage bin. I'm not sure...maybe one of you farmers could tell us. You might see the speed sign. It drops to 20 mph.

Photo No. 12 - We see more dwellings in rural Oregon.

Photo No. 13 - And we see a little water in a reservoir. I believe that the white items are for new trees or plants. I suppose they offer some protection.

Photo No. 14 - We passed through another small town.

Photo No. 15 - The coast ranges were nearby, with a little rain falling again.

Photo No. 16 - Yes we did have a little rain ahead of us and a rainbow tried hard to make its presence.

Hi all,

More from the Shropshire Union Canal.

I'm guessing this would of been a warehouse along the Canal and now it's living accommodation. Didn'e expect this whilst staying on a Marina, It's an Oyster catcher. There ain't no Oysters around here mate.   (Aperture f/7.1 ~~ (SS): 1/500 ~~ ISO 1000 ~~ EC: 0 ~~ PASM Mode: Custom ~~ Metering: Partial ~~ Focus Type: AI Servo ~~ FL: 300mm ~~ Lens: Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD ~~ Camera ID: Canon EOS 7D Mark II).

Re: Waterways.

The first picture is outstanding.  I just love seeing the reflection.  Those three pine cones are nice.  You make them look special.  That's a neat bird.  What's the ID?  I'm so glad to see your crocus flowers.  We finally are starting to see some too, but they'll probably not bloom for a while as we have a little snow forecast in the next two to five days for the valley floors.

Digi you know your wood duck luck and photos always make me jealous. Mocha the whole series is great as well but love the Oyster Catcher.

I found some Gadwalls myself and thanks to the tracking of the R7 I didn't miss the flight shot when they flushed and my shutter speed was still down at 1/400. Lucky me. And an Eagle that landed in the same tree on two different days. Unfortunately our crazy all over the place weather still has migration at a standstill.

I say, this is traffic. I try to keep Miso inside when this happens because you would see deers running in all directions. I think Miso can run at 20 mph, I mean he’s flying!

I put two separate piles to mitigate the fights because they’re ready to fight for one grain of food at this time of the year. They use only their trails because otherwise, they are having a hard time to move with all that snow. Their trails are so densely packed that I can walk pretty far following them even without snow shoes.

Deers arriving…

… and then they’re fighting…

Benji. I can hear misco going crazy clear down here in Ohio wanting to play with it's tall friends lol. I do the same for our deer friends when the weather turns bad and it's hard for them to fend for themselves. Fortunately this year our biggest snow so far has been a whopping 3 inches. Our weather is totally nuts we have had days of what is considered normally warm of 30f and 70f in the same week and that has been cycling for the last 4 weeks. I can't remember a winter this mild ever where I live .

Re: Beautiful sets as always

That's neat that you can take such good pictures of birds in flight.  I love the eagles pictures as well.  I also did find two eagles a few weeks ago.  They were probably 250 feet away high in a tree.

I would say nine deer.   Wow...those are great to see.  I'm glad you are taking care of them.

Same thing here: atypical winter, very warm, but since we are a bit more north, we’ve had lots of snow. However, most lakes and rivers are dangerous. Some lake and rivers ice crossings (cars, snowmobiles and ATVs) remained closed this year. Last time it was almost that warm was in 2017, but the trend seems to be accelerating. While they want to shove electric cars at us, several countries (including US, Australia, China and a bunch of others) are producing most of their electricity with fossil fuels. In Quebec, we’re the exception: almost all of our electricity is hydroelectric. However, we don’t have enough to to power 3 millions electric cars without doing some serious work with our rivers up north and that can take 15-20 years to accomplish, provided that you have the human workforce, which we are short of.

Go figure.

Re: How many can you count?

Aww yes EVs, I see the pros, but also not blind to the cons. Here in the US our electric grid is woefully out dated and electric cost are always soaring. Trading one cost for another seems like a wash as far as the consumer goes. I also know so many that can't afford a good used gas car, I have no idea how they would afford a new EV. Maybe they will come up with some sort of rental system to help move people to them. I myself would like to see more fast light rail. I would gladly ride a train to my work which is a 45 minute drive by car. Just yesterday I had to take my wife to her neruologist for her checkup, 90 minute drive one way . How great would it have been to jump on a train then grab a taxi or Uber from a station near the hospital ? Well to get back on subject at least we will be able to get photos soon of the new futuristic looking vehicles .
