Sigma 23mm f/1.4 for EF-M?

The first three crop Sigma f/1.4 lenses are available for Canon EOS M. (16mm, 30mm, 56mm)

Now a Sigma 23mm f/1.4 lens is about to be announced for other crop systems:

https://www.fujirumors.com/leaked-specs-sigma-23mm-f1-4-dc-dn-for-fujifilm-x/

It will be very interesting to see if Sigma will bother to offer it also in a EF-M mount.

Thoughts?

Even if it is offered, I really love my 22mm Canon so I don't think I would buy this.

Sigma is not bringing their 18-50mm f/2.8 to EF-M, so this 23mm f/1.4 won't be coming either.  The rumors specifically list L, E and X mounts.

Good point! I forgot about the 18-50.

I hope that Canon will open up the RF mount for crop cameras soon. I really like my 56mm Sigma.

Not likely either (unless Sigma figures out the new communication algorithms on their own).

Canon’s plan for R is a Unilateral one.  They saw an opportunity to strengthen their business plan and took it.  Some folks may disagree, but I think it was a smart move for them, and this move will actually strengthen them as a provider (esp in the current market).

I am getting over it.

Sure do like my Sigma lenses for my M6II.

Really nice how they perform on the M6II and makes me want to keep the M6II forever.

My M6II has become such a money maker and we have bonded.

It is R8 or bust. If I run into  Sigma EF mount lenses I love for the great price I will adapt them to the R8.

M6II will pay for the R8. :}

Lots of EF lenses of all kinds that can be used on the R bodies!

The R8 is going to be hugely successful IMHO.

Still nothing in the R series that’ll take the place of the M6ii yet though!

A car or guitar. if it is a photo of something for sale I want everything in focus.

I shoot JPEG for fast product photography and the 32mp crop allows me to zoom out and get max DOF.

And IS is turned off and no IBIS. M6II is on a tripod and razor sharp.

Then when cropped and downsized to 1600x1600 in Affinity Photo i can produce a nice online product photography photo fast.

Using not pricey at all kit zooms I can play with perspective and make real nice photos that sell using the M6II .

32mp on a high quality crop sensor rules.

The issue is not one of reverse engineering.  The roadblock is all of the patents Canon has on the RF mount.  Not only are the communication protocols patented, but even the mount itself is patented.  The RF lens that got Samyang threatened with legal action by Canon wasn't even using the RF protocols.  It was using the old EF protocols and looked to the camera like an EF lens on an adapter.

I don't mind paying more for Canon gear. I just want some of it to be top quality and small.

Hopefully they will make few high end L primes that are also small.

The current L RF lenses are incredible but they are soooo big.

A little trio would be great:

28mm f/2 L

50mm f/2 L

85mm f/2.8 L

All as small as possible, no IS, weather sealed, ideally same filter thread. Load it with fancy elements (ASPH, UD,...) to make then ultra high quality. Ideally internal focus with nano USM motors. The hope would be that at same apertures they would be as good as the ultra fast primes.

I would pay $1000+ each.

People lust over f/1.2 but in practice f/2 is usually enough.

I don't think the full frame RF bodies (even R5) are big, it is the lenses that are huge.

creativity using competitor's offerings on lenses when canon is pouring great creativity into their AF and bodies and providing their own creative lenses?

I wouldn't say it never works out

in fact, those expensive crop bodies being released in the marketplace are hard to swallow considering Canon's FF  R6II and R8 releases ...

So much so, some may not be around ...

Maybe, just maybe the reason Canon did what they did was an engineer was playing with the buttons on a R5 doing R5 body firmware troubleshooting with a Viltrox lens attached and the camera got hot and the battery exploded ?

Problem with Sigma 18-50/2.8 and X-T5: Fujifilm X System / SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com)

Sigma and Fuji are getting a lot of phone calls and returns because of this ?

I worked at a Sony repair place and people would bring in Sony stuff confused about how to use it.

Sometimes I would get to sit right next to Sony customer and try to explain to them how to use their new Sony device.

Sometimes I felt like grabbing their hand and shouting NO not that button, THIS button !

With all the new features on the new Canon cameras I am thinking they are getting a lot of calls.

Canon does not have enough workers to answer calls about why a Sigma or Viltrox lens will not get all of the kids eyes in focus ?

Stuff like why are Joey's eyes always in focus but Jimmy's are not with my new Viltrox lens on my R50 ?

Sigma is not bringing their 18-50mm f/2.8 to EF-M, so this 23mm f/1.4 won't be coming either. The rumors specifically list L, E and X mounts.

Good point! I forgot about the 18-50.

I hope that Canon will open up the RF mount for crop cameras soon. I really like my 56mm Sigma.

Not likely either (unless Sigma figures out the new communication algorithms on their own).

Nothing is keeping the 3rd party RF manual lenses from working or selling.

Canon could threaten them with legal action, if they wanted. The fact that B&H lists 30% more manual focus lenses for Z mount than RF mount suggests third party manufacturers are pulling back there too.

However Canon blocks anything with AF.

Canon’s plan for R is a Unilateral one. They saw an opportunity to strengthen their business plan and took it. Some folks may disagree, but I think it was a smart move for them, and this move will actually strengthen them as a provider (esp in the current market).

Stifling creativity and competition through artificial means never works out in the long run.

You should study up on the history of manufacturing! Every company ever created has aimed to stifle competition through any means necessary! Live in the real world man!

R2

The truly successful companies outengineer the competition instead of relying on lawyers to protect profits.

Maybe, just maybe the reason Canon did what they did was an engineer was playing with the buttons on a R5 doing R5 body firmware troubleshooting with a Viltrox lens attached and the camera got hot and the battery exploded ?

R line not ready for prime time ?

We do not know the reason.

I am going to wait awhile.

well, time is money for sure

but I couldn't figure out the focus sensitivity adjustments provided on my 7d mark II

Canon is moving to put the camera in AI and let the camera decide to focus -- let it rip

Canon, in part, doesn't want all the calls for third party issues that take away valuable time

there are so many firmware updates going on by Canon with RF that they would continually hose third party
