How your opinion about Sigma fp and fp L would change, if...

They had fast electronic rolling shutter speed like at least 1/200s and raw video could be full sensor readout up to 60 fps? Are these Sigma designs the future, but affordable sensor tech is not quite there yet? They surely are compact, so full frame being too big is more like a pricing issue than anything else because fast sensors are not cheap right now.

I think the fp is fine as it is.

Fotoni,

The fp with a grip, built in EVF, a hot shoe & mech shutter would be fine for me.

There is a choice of several grips for the fp, from Sigma themselves and others. I like this one:

It also works well on the DP3M. And it's cheap.

A hot shoe is provided with the fp, but you have to attach it to the left hand end.

A lens with its own leaf shutter would be good (but probably very expensive).

My guess is the fp 2 will have a stacked 24 MP or 26 MP sensor, and it will be capable of shooting 4Kp120, similar to Fuji's X-H2S camera. The fp L2 will do 8Kp30, because it will use Sony's 50 MP stacked sensor, from their A1. Both will cost more than their predecessors, so all four cameras may be sold at the same time, with a price list like this:

fp $1,799

fp 2 $2,299

fp L $2,499

fp L2 $3,499

I wouldn't be surprised if all the cameras will be able to record in 12 bit BRAW internally. (Obviously the fp and fp L would need firmware updates, and Sigma will need to upgrade tge SD card slots to SD Express for the new cameras.)

Yes Ted, that's "my guess." What do you think Ted?  Will there be two new fp models eventually? And will they be called the fp 2 and fp L2?

The two things holding me back from a Sigma fp are

a) a lack of mechanical and/or fast global shutter - not great for still photography, especially in artificial light

b) a lack of log profile for video / over-sharpening + over contrast in video - not great for (casual) videography

If I could depend on the fp for stills and (casual) video - it would be a no brainer.

But it compromised too much in pursuit of being "the smallest" or whatever.

I don't think the camera makes such a difference as many people suppose, unless you are taking very high definition shots of architecture.

It's nice to have a good camera, and camera technology is a fascinating subject, but what makes a photograph stand out is the photographer's eye, skill and luck.

Where the camera does make a difference is that some cameras are easy to take with you, while others tend to stay at home. (Of course one can take good photos indoors too.)

Absolutely agree with your first point but since the Fp can do 12 bit CDNG I don't understand why you want a log profile. What am I missing?

I've only had a couple of afternoons playing with a borrowed Fp but thought it was fantastic apart from the rolling shutter. I'm hoping it's selling well and before long there will be a Mark 2 with a faster sensor and if all they really change is the sensor I don't see the price increasing much, although I'm not an engineer so again I might be missing something.

I think a problem in enjoying digital images, from any sensor, is the imbedded data on every image. I think fp/L opinion might change, with both Foveon apologists and naysayers, if the data simply said Sigma; no sensor architecture information to skew an opinion. One can no longer enjoy an image before reviewing the data to make sure it was obtained on the proper gear. The fear of damaging credibility by guessing wrong robs of the enjoyment. In years past one could appreciate fine work, blind to equipment. Appreciation now all too frequently carries a caveat.

I'm lazy and if I can capture something in-camera that doesn't require post-processing, I'm all for it - CDNG is too much to bother storing/dealing with

I've heard that the straight-out-of-camera video tends to be overly sharpened and saturated, even if you dial down the settings

If it can get me to a video that needs minimal post processing to look good + eliminate rolling shutter (under artificial light especially) for stills then the fp would be an ideal stills + video camera for me

As is I'm still using Sony (with adapted lenses only) and Fuji (with autofocus lenses) until I can justify a new camera / system

Ideally the fp would replace my Sony as a good setup for adapted lenses and Fuji for some light video work

I've heard of someone using BRAW through the HDMI output and an Atamos but that's too much gear for me to want to keep track of

8x10 film, or larger, would be the answer, in that case.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that. Much appreciated. I'm all for lazy but personally think 12 bit CDNG to an SSD is just brilliant. Hopefully somebody will come up with a really good way to attach the SSD to the camera. I used gaffer tape which actually worked quite well. Thanks again.
