Sitting on equipment

I have the xh1 and the xe4. For the last year I’ve only been reaching for the xe4 leaving the xh1 gathering dust on the shelf. I took the xh1 out the other night for some on the floor shots at msg while it performed well I know I’m never taking it out again. With that said the xe4 doesn’t have weather sealing and that worries me a lot. I’ve called stores about selling the cameras but the value seems to have depreciated to the point of no return. I’m actually thinking of just getting either the xpro3 or xt3. How would you go about selling equipment for a “fair price”?? Thank you in advance.

Where are you?

Personally I'd stick with the X-E4 and a bag.  WR is 90% a marketing ploy.

There are any number of options for selling gear.  You can do it privately via local ads.  DPR has a For Sale and Wanted forum you can use, if you wish: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/1056 .  MPB will take in used gear, though you might not get the best price for it... it's a good option, however, if you are unable to sell the gear locally or though other channels.  That's what immediately comes to mind, and there are others as well you can find with a bit of research.

KEH is another option.  Again, you won't get top prices, but I know they are a joy to work with on the buyer's end and always have a good inventory of nice cameras, so they must be at least decent to their sellers.

A commodity and a camera is such is worth no more than whatever someone else is wiling to pay. I expect the stores you contacted have a pretty good hand on that pulse.

Retail places like B&H or KEH will offer you about half of what they hope to sell it for- but on the other hand you don't have to deal with the hassle of trying to deal with an unknown buyer and listing it, answering inquiries. They will even send you a free shipping label. I use them when I want to get rid of equipment I don't use anymore rather than trying to chase top dollar. Gets rid of it quickly and simply.  If I am not using it, it is really worth nothing.  It isn't generating any revenue or pictures sitting in the closet or on a shelf. I've already gotten all the enjoyment out of it I am going to- time to move on.

Re: Sitting on equipment

I was in a similar situation when my older Olympus E-M1 was essentially just sitting on the shelf collectong dust, but I've been keeping it due to the weather sealing (I own two or three weather sealed lenses), since my primary camera was not sealed. However I didn't use it often, just like you maybe once a year, but I more or less had to force myself taking it out.

Market prices for this particular camera was fairly low too, so selling it didn't seem like an option. I finally contacted MPB an requested a quote for buying my camera and was fairly surprised about the rather good offer. I accepted and sent the camera off the next day. Since then I have sold multiple items with MPB. What caused me to sell it was the conflict of having it just sitting around, not doing anything while still slowly losing the rather low value which was already left and last but not least also taking up space. I finally decided it was better getting ~200 bucks out of it and either put those away for savings on other equipment or just use it for other stuff. I can't imagine the X-H1 being completely worthless and just selling for 100 bucks or something, even if you can get just 200 out of it, it's still money you can spend elsewhere.

Totally agree. KEH is pretty fair in their offers. When you consider all the fees on eBay and PayPal plus dealing with buyers who may not be complerely honorable, getting a fair deal from KEH is worth it every time.

For those located in or reasonably close to Germany, I can also warmly recommend the services of Foto Mundus. Haven't had to bother mucking around with eBay in ages because of them, and the offered prices are always more than acceptable.

And in France, Leboncoin is where most go to for privately buying and selling photo gear, no fees for putting an advert online either ...
Not so much activity on eBay.

The beauty about Leboncoin is that with serious sellers, you can chat with them, find out more about whatever they're selling, ask for more details and photos, and generally be reassured ... or negotiate the price.  Helps if you speak French, of course !

Fred Miranda forums.  I have had much better success there than anywhere else, although I have also sold to KEH and MPB over the years.

Why? are you really using your camera in situations that need it or are you only thinking hypothetically?

I’ve called stores about selling the cameras but the value seems to have depreciated to the point of no return.

The X-H1 goes for about $700-800 used no? The X-E4 is hot and not in stock. You should be able to get you $ back on that.

You sell on classifieds like this forum has or on FB marketplace, etc.  There are many options out there.

+1 for Fred Miranda Buy/Sell forum. Actually, +100. Great place to sell (or buy) with fellow photographers.

Re: Sitting on equipment

While I tend to keep my lenses, I do sell bodies all the time - unless the price is so low, there is no point in bothering putting it on e-bay.

What you say is that WR is your biggest gripe with the X-E4. Did you ever run into a situation where it mattered? Me, I am not out in the rain or in countries with very high humidity.

The X-T3 has a much nicher EVF than the X-E4 and a better control layout while the X-Pro3 is kind of a special case: You have to need and like the OVF. Given the price, I would rather go for the X-T3.
