New release: Fujifilm X-T4 Extended spectrum (IR)

B&H seems to have listed a previously unannounced IR version of the X-T4. Pretty neat.

Re: New release: Fujifilm X-T4 Extended spectrum (IR)

I can't find anything from Fuji about it. Maybe just an X-T4 somebody converted to IR. Lifepixel can do it for under $300. That combined with the current sale on X-T4 would be about $1825 or almost $400 less than the one listed as "not currently available" on BH Photo.

I did find reference to a GFX infrared camera in 2020: https://www.fujifilm.com/us/en/news/digital-cameras/fujifilm-introduces-GFX100IR-infrared-camera

"Availability
GFX100 IR is designed for forensic, scientific, and cultural preservation applications, and the product will not be made available to general photographers or customers for personal use. GFX100 IR will only be offered by specific, Fujifilm authorized retailers, and sales of GFX100 IR will be subject to a GFX100 IR User Agreement, which sets out the specific terms of use for the camera. GFX100 IR is currently expected to be available in the first quarter of 2021."

Re: New release: Fujifilm X-T4 Extended spectrum (IR)

I had a Cannon point and shoot converted to IR. It was fun to use. Conversion lets you use "normal" shutter speeds. A regular camera has an IR blocking filter on the sensor and when you add an IR filter to the front of the camera (which blocks visible light but allows IR to pass through), not much light is getting to the sensor so you need a long shutter speed to capture images. IR can degrade color images sometimes. Conversion removes the blocking one over the sensor and puts the IR filter there. Sounds like the ES Fuji has no filter on the sensor- to shoot in regular color you need to put an IR blocking filter in front of the camera and an IR filter if you want to shoot that way based on what I was reading on the GFX camera. https://www.popsci.com/story/technology/fujifilm-gfx-infrared-camera/

"The sensor inside Fujifilm’s 100-megapixel monster can capture wavelengths in both infrared and the visible spectrum. Operators can tweak the kind of light they capture by adding filters in front of the lens to restrict specific wavelengths. For instance, if you add an IR cut filter to the lens, you can capture typical color images very close to what you’d expect from a retail version of the GFX100.

Being that B&H marks the page with its authorized dealer logo, it would seem to be an original Fuji product. You are nevertheless right that I can't find any additional information on it apart from the link in the OP.

Yes, it is pretty neat but as has been pointed out in other replies Fuji has always restricted distribution of such cameras such that they are not available to any photog walking in off the street. So as a practical matter you are going to have to go the conversion route.

They made a similar model for the X-T1 (https://www.fujifilm.com/us/en/consumer/digitalcameras/ir-camera). Intended for specialist fields like forensics and the sales of the body were restricted.

B&H seems to have taken down the page. Perhaps an early publication mishap on their part.
