Anyone thinking of an R50 + RF 800mm upgrade?

One thing I just wish with the EOS M line was having more than 300mm at an affordable price.

Sure they are options but the prices are just too much once you go above the 300mm mark.

The RF line though has few telephoto lenses and affordable too.

With the R50 introduction, it might just sway me to try it out.

A few things to work through here. First is whether or not the entry-level R50 can provide enough keepers for these types of tasks (what are you planning, birding, wildlife, sports?). IMO the spec is a bit low (on paper), but what would give me hope is that it does have DIGIC X for guts. All of these newer bodies are truly blessed.

The other issue that comes to mind right away is if the little R50 would actually be enjoyable to shoot these subjects with. The size, ergonomics, (lack of) controls, small grip, small low-res viewfinder, etc etc all do work against it.

BUT, it still has DIGIC X inside…

Maybe you’ll just have to try it out and report back to us! Happy shopping!

ps. Even with the mighty R5, acquiring BIFs at 1280mm (equiv) is a bridge too far.  Same pretty much holds true at 960mm (for small fast BIFs).  600-800mm (equiv) is about my sweet spot.

I don't mind, it would be a huge upgrade coming from an M3.

Although only downside is no IBIS (stabilization).

I'm very happy with the M3, just always wished I could add a longer lens.

Personally the 600 f/11 and 800 f/11 are just too dark for me on an APS-C camera. They cut it on a R6 - or on the APS-C R's I think in good light or slow speed stuff only.

Have you looked at adapted sigma or tamron 100-400's for EF-M?

Used copies of the excellent Canon100-400 II with a dealer warranty also coming right down as everyone ditches these for the RF 100-500.   The 100-400 II works nicely on my M6II.

I just check the prices.

I could literally get an R50 with the RF 100-400mm for the price of one of those lenses.

Even used copies in good condition?

Used usually aren't that far off from new prices where I'm at. Usually 20% less. Occasionally you can be lucky and find a bargain. But I'm just hypothetically speaking what a bargain the new RF50 with a telephoto RF lens is.
