Maybe 2025? Not sure I can wait that long although the more I look at my 5Ds files, the more I want to stand pat.

32 is the perfect mp. So it takes longer to meet the high expectations of a perfect product.

24mp is pedestrian and no one cares if it is rushed or a half effort. Mistakes don't matter with the lowly 24mp so that is the sensor to do trials and experiments on.

The R8 has almost everything in an entry level camera at an entry level price. The 24Mp-count is the last barrier imo. If the R8II comes in at 32Mp it will hurt sales of the R5 line.

Sony gave everything away with the A7IV at a pretty low price. I don't know who's buying those 60Mp+ camera's, but for most zooms it's overkill, and shooting heavy primes stopped down all the time is pretty cumbersome. There's also the physical barrier of a diffraction limit somewhere, so the Mp-race will end some day no matter what.

So buy your R8 and be happy with it's low price for now,  it will tease you to get an RF 24-70mm f/2.8  L IS USM - and you won't resist - and that will cause a next body purchase when that 32Mp body will be announced.  The L standard zoom will set you back 2500 euro, and that 32Mp body won't be 1700 euro but rather 3200 or so.

R8 = 1700 euro now and 3700 euro future purchases. That's why it has a low price.

Canon Japan's support page, https://canon.jp/support/repair/period gives the end of support for the M6 II as March 2029 which suggests that it was discontinued in March 2022. The limited edition Gold RP is supported until February 2026, the Gold M200 until March 2028, the Ra until January 2029. The RP, R, and Rs 5-7 & 10, M200 and Kiss M (M50 II) are listed as To Be Determined, and the R6II and R8 haven't appeared on the list yet. if they've discontinued any of then yet, they're not saying.

The 5Ds is listed as supported until May 2027 and the 5DsR until August 2028, so they must have had a lot of unsold stock to shift. It's the better selling cameras that will disappear soonest once out of production.

50MP of 5DS/5DSR not surpassed in 8 years!!!

I am standing pat with my 5DSR!  Hard to believe Canon has not surpassed 50MP in eight years!  Eight years!

Where is the 90MP that was rumored four or five years ago?  Not that I need that much, but what the heck.  At least match Sony.

I have thought about an R7, but I seem to be buying longer lenses instead!

I went to the store today and checked out the R6MKII. It's smaller than the 5Ds but it is very comfortable to hold. I'm very impressed by how quickly it focuses. Had the salesman try an EF 50/1.2 L and an adapter. I love it!

Having said the above, I am not sure if the R6MKII's IQ will be better than the 5Ds. Sure maybe from ISO 1600 and upwards. However, with my current software (i.e. DXO PL6 Elite featuring Deep Prime XD, Topaz Labs Suite and Adobe Photoshop) shooting at ISO 6400 is not an issue anymore. So basically I'll be buying the R6MKII for what it is advertised for----electronic shutter speed. That's assuming that I can get 12-20 fps with my EF lenses using ES.  Mind you it will be useful for the sports that I sometimes do (i.e. indoor volleyball and outdoor tennis). Thus I'm still debating.

If Canon gave us a 32mp, we might not buy another body

I think you’re right, a 32mp Canon body may take some sales away from those buying a 45mp Canon R5. ….

So buy your R8 and be happy with it's low price for now, it will tease you to get an RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L IS USM - and you won't resist - and that will cause a next body purchase when that 32Mp body will be announced. R8 = 1700 euro now and 3700 euro future purchases. That's why it has a low price.

….But I suppose Canon will be happy as long as it’s a Canon body that’s bought, and it’s profitable for them with the high volume they sell…

..and as you said, if Canon can sell you a cheap lower mp , slightly limited camera to get you into the Canon system, then you’ll probably update to a  superior, more expensive body in the future… so they’ve sold you twice over.

If Canon made a 32mp body that was priced and had specification between the R6mk2 and R5mk1….Iprobably wouldn’t buy another body for 10 years!

I would hold out for the R5 or R5 II.  Get the speed and AF of the RF system and the image quality of the 5DS.

I think the industry as a whole has settled upon 24MP as a sweet spot for most photographers.  I'm inclined to agree.  Over the last few years I've owned FF cameras as high as 30, 36, 45 and 50MP.   I've now got the R6II and a pair of micro 4/3 cameras that are only 16MP.  I've also got a 5Ds.

The megapixels just aren't that important to me.  Of my cameras, the 5Ds has gotten the fewest shutter actuations over the last few months.  I still shoot with it regularly, but more so because it's my only DSLR now and I enjoy the experience.  It's rare I grab it solely because I need a 50MP sensor.

Sure, if I'm going out to shoot dedicated landscapes the 5Ds is the camera I take.  I have it, so why not in that case.  However...knowing what I can do with the R6II and how well it holds up at large print sizes, if I didn't own the 5Ds already I probably wouldn't be lusting after more than 24 megapixels anyway.

I'm now in the camp of "don't really care about more pixels". Canon's market research has probably told them plenty of other photographers feel similar.

Megapixels mysticism…

Just a very small percentage of photographs are printed. For a big  ( A2 ) print 20mp is enough and when almost all images are viewed on max 5K PC screens  a 10 mp sensor is enough in real life.

Of course it feels psychologically  better to have more 😇😉

Canon does not understand that amateur photographers do not understand this basic thing

Agree - but There are still many photographers who think they need more and they are willing to pay more. Perhaps also a status symbol .

24MP is sufficient for almost all uses - including large prints - except for when cropping is needed, such as in wildlife photography when those extra MP are invaluable.

The R-series camera to rival the 5DS is the R5. It is close is resolution (frankly to the point where the difference is not significant, imo), but with much higher frame rate capabilities and much more versatility in terms of ISO, plus new AF, etc.

It has been one of the bright spots to see the "megapixel wars" slow down. It worries me to see threads like this, because in the end, I would guess, the marketing department at Canon designs the cameras more than the engineering department does. And if the marketing guys at Canon see this, it might motivate them.

There are already cameras like the R5, why does it have to include all the other cameras too ?

I sometimes zoom out to get extra DOF when doing product photography.

32mp rather than 24mp makes enough of a difference for me.
