What are the chances (cross-posted in the Canon R forum as well)
1

I've recently become aware of the excellent Canon EOS M6 Mark II in my search for a pocketable ILC. I waited to buy one thinking perhaps the R50 or R8 might be the R version of the M6II. Sadly, I seem to be mistaken.

With that said: In seeing how the M50, M5, M6, and M6 Mark II rolled out years ago, I'm curious about the following:

What are the chances that Canon plans to develop a future camera in the next couple years that combines the R50 and R8 into something similar to the M6 Mark II only in R mount? It seems like the RS lens they are "developing" are just "reworkings" of the M mount version...and seeing how they seem to push cameras out, is this a possible scenario? If so, when do you think it will happen…2 years from now, 3 years from now…next month?

Complete Tangent: I'm, personally, not too impressed by the R50 or R8. (I mean how many iterations of a similar body type can you produce...e.g. R5, R6, R6II, expected R5II, R7, R10, R50, R8...). I understand they come at different price points, but the Canon "hammer" is getting a little too ridiculous with so many bodies with only slight differences to spur the buyer into the next most expensive camera "up the ladder."

One of them is, the other two aren't.

The M5 outsold the original M6 by a considerable margin. Then, the M50 outsold the M5, as well as every other M model. While some may prefer the slightly smaller form factor of a camera like the M6 II, the overwhelming majority prefer a camera with a built-in EVF.  This is especially true at "enthusiast" level price points.

You also have to consider the impact of smartphones on this sector of the market.  Even the relatively tiny M200 is absolutely massive compared to any smartphone.  For an entry level user that is not skilled in the use of a dedicated camera, the smartphone will produce better images too.  Stripped down and basic entry level cameras like the M100/M200 are a dead end due to smartphones.

I would say the chances of a smaller RF-S camera coming without an EVF are pretty slim. On the off chance one does appear, it will probably have a typical Canon tilt/swivel screen and the model will be marketed for vlogging. Picture something like the Sony FX30 or Nikon Z30.

Pure speculation here, but my opinion is that the M200 styled camera to fit below the R50 will show up next. They might make something even cheaper than the R50 in a SLR shape like the cheapest of cheap Rebel T7 and T100, but I think they would hold off on those two so they can sell as many R50 cameras as possible at a higher margin.

After that I think it's more likely we will see some type of camera that mimics the content creator focused cameras where Sony placed the ZV-E10/FX30 and Nikon the Z30. Basically a R50, R10, or R7 with no EVF but a step above a R200 plus extra video features like a microphone array. I'm thinking it could be the R7C. That would kinda be like the M6ii but I don't know if Canon would bother adding support for an external viewfinder.

I'm not sure we will see a camera like the M6/M6ii again.

Only God knows what the chances are, haha, but I don’t think we will see something similar like the M6II from Canon in the near future at all.

I think this is not only possible, but very likely. Many systems have light/compact bodies in a point and shoot form factor, that are small enough to fit a woman's purse or a jacket pocket with ease, and have the "rangefinder" shape (i.e. no "hump"). The M100/200 bodies were quite successful, I think. Some people prefer the "non-serious", non professional look of this body shape, maybe combined with colours other than black. It is also easily combined with a flip over selfie display like on the M200.
I think Canon will make a replacement for the M200/M6 as soon as more urgent gaps are filled and maybe together with a EF-R 22mm pancake. Or maybe when the M system is discontinued.
Now I think the larger mount will change the shape of these bodies somewhat, but it need not necessarily make them that much larger/heavier.

I’m 100% with you on this one.  I mean word for word.
