Some data to chew on, it does not answer your specific question but thought it might be helpful along the way.

I have both a EF 500mm 4 L IS and a EF 300mm 2.8  L IS II (the last version 300/2.8 Canon made). Here are the FPS I get on my Canon R6 Mark II. It has single, 5fps, H (20fps), H+ (40fps).

EF 500 4 L IS - shot at ISO 10000, 1/1000 @ f4

  • Electronic H+    15fps
  • Electronic H      15fps
  • Mechanical H+  7.5fps
  • Mechanical H    5fps

EF 300 2.8 L IS II - shot at ISO 5000, 1/1000 @ f2.8

  • Electronic H+      41
  • Electronic H        21
  • Mechanical H+   13fps
  • Mechanical H      7fps

I have the IS version and use it on an R7 and an R6. So, not the same version but the lens performs extraordinarily well. If I recall correctly the frame rate is reduced a bit on the R6 but surprisingly I think I get the full frame rate on the R7. On either camera I get the full frame rate in electronic shutter mode but that doesn't really help for sports photography in most situations.

The IBIS works well on the two lenses I have that don't have built in IS.

The 1.4 TC works reasonably well. The 2.0 is just OK.

I use this lens for sports swapping it back and forth between the R6, and the R7 when I need extra reach. It is fantastic. No regrets.

I got it over a 400 2.8 because I can easily handhold it and even use it indoors for sports like basketball.

I just got the R6MKII. The AF performance of the EF 300/2.8 L IS is excellent! When you use your 300/2.8 L IS does it give kinda muted rolling marble sound? That's the only drawback of this lens. I tried all of my EF lenses and they don't have this sound.

The lens is noisier than later generations, yes. No wheres near as loud as my 300 f4 L which I thought was broken when I got it, but louder than my RF 100-500 L...but then everything is.

You will really enjoy this lens. I shot a baseball game with it today and the subject separate is fantastic.

Appreciate your comments.

My 135/2 L made this sound when I used it with either my 5DMKII or the 5Ds. But on the R6MKII it is silent.

Looking forward to shooting with the 300/2.8 L IS again. Last time I used it was at an outdoor photoshoot. Should have given the model a walkie talkie

This is good info. thanks for sharing.

I just ordered a Sandisk 128 GB UHS-11 card. On the 300/2.8 L IS, If I can get 15-20 fps H+ in ES with the R6MKII I'll be more than happy.

Re: Both EF 300mm f2.8 L and L IS, not fully compatible

Thank you all for continuing to post your experiences using the R7 with big white EF lenses. I guess the only way to find out how my EF 300mm f/2.8 (non IS) will work on an R7 will be to get a copy of the R7 and try it out for myself. Also, there is this other YouTube video where the R7 is used on the EF 300mm f2.8 IS II, in which the lens is likened to a baby EF 500 mm once the effective angle of view is considered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gozlMGzX3fI

You could test it at a retailer.  I will do more research.  The R7, I believe, is faster than the R6II.

Thank-you for your detailed break down for the R6 II.  Something some would not take the minute to test.

Interesting, the electronic is actually a step down from the original R6 which gives the full 20fps.

Re: Both EF 300mm f2.8 L and L IS, not fully compatible

I was surprised that the R6m2 was slower too. I had a R6 loaner from Canon CPS to try at baseball and the curved swinging bats effect from the rolling shutter are a no go for me. I hope the R6m2 has reduced that effect enough I can use ES, especially with the 500/4. 7.5fps mechanical on the 500/4 is too slow for me. The 300/2.8 II at 13fps mechanical I'm good with if I have to go to mechanical shutter. I'll use it with a 1.4x III.

Hi Duane,

Just curious what kind of SD card are you using to test these lenses?

Sony 32gb Tough G card (up to: read 300mb/s, write 299mb/s

Not sure that could affect the test though, buffer will hold 190 jpegs.

Thanks Duane. No, I was just looking for SD card experience/suggestions as I am still using UHS-I. Anyway, I just ordered a Sandisk UHS-II card.

300mm handling; time to whip out the khaki cargo shorts

[text snipped]

My 135/2 L made this sound when I used it with either my 5DMKII or the 5Ds. But on the R6MKII it is silent.

Looking forward to shooting with the 300/2.8 L IS again. Last time I used it was at an outdoor photoshoot. Should have given the model a walkie talkie

Maybe about a decade ago I kidded in the Canon 1D forum here that the 'official' uniform of all shooting with the 300/2.8 L and 400/2.8 L lenses is the iconic cargo khaki shorts. That was my observation when I see them at the annual tennis US Open tuneup tournament here.

I finally got a chance to use my 300/2.8 L IS on the field. The AF performance is superb with the R6MKII. Handling is great; I use the touch and drag method of shooting. I left the hood at home to lessen the weight and the bulk. It didn't seem heavy at all but I alternated shooting with the 50mm.

Somehow I didn't notice the rolling marble sound that I mentioned earlier when I first tried it at home. Maybe the outside sounds muted it but I'm really loving the lens with the R6MKII.
