EOS M 22mm f2 IQ?

I’m looking for a small, walk-around travel kit, with good IQ.

The R50 and R8 didn’t impress me.

I’m more Interested in the feature set of the M6II. How is the IQ of the EOS M 22mm paired with the M6II for a walk around, small kit?

There doesn’t seem to be much M lenses to choose from. And I’m nervous about buying a system that may be discontinued soon (or neglected), But the 22mm looks pretty small and lightweight.

It’s an excellent lens so no worries there. However the todays  R50 and R8 announcement realistically means there will be no further M development . Sadly  I regard it as the end of the line for the M system ,oh well such is life and it was good while it lasted.

Personally, I wasn’t too impressed by the R50 or R8. I didn’t feel they matched up to the benefits of the M6II.

The R50 met the size requirements I’m looking for in a walkabout camera, but was way to entry level. I was hoping the R8 would be pretty much the M6II size, just in R mount (and perhaps with some IBIS and R6/R5 AF). However, it just seems like a repackaged RP with some R6 Mark II guts to please the R/RP users.

I mean, how many of that body style does Canon need? (e.g. The R6, R5, R7, R10, R6 II, etc.). Give us a small, every day carry R mount camera that is similar to where the M6II left off (if they are going to discontinue the M mount)

Have shot with the M22/2 since 2013. Very good lens. Max sharpness at f/4, good wide open. The only optically superior native M lens is the 32/1.4. Get it. Get them both.

I don’t see an M6II style R camera happening ,that ship has sailed .

Very, very good. The M6II is a fantastic walk around camera. (I bought a second one, not long ago.) And with the EF-M 22mm mounted it fits nicely in a jacket pocket. I can wholeheartedly recommend this combo.

There doesn’t seem to be much M lenses to choose from. And I’m nervous about buying a system that may be discontinued soon (or neglected), But the 22mm looks pretty small and lightweight.

There are maybe more lenses than you think.

  • 7(8) Canon EF-M lenses, from very good to excellent .
  • The excellent Sigma F/1.4 trio (16/30/56mm).
  • The Viltrox trio.
  • Plus a lot of manual focus EF-M mount lenses (incl. some very popular Laowa and Samyang UWA lenses).
  • And it can also use all EF and EFs glass with an adapter.

Agree 100%.  I'd still like to see an M6ii form factor in an R mount sometime.

For now, the M6ii is still a killer body, and has a good number of lenses to pair with it.  No big issues with the little 22 (it's a decent lens), but I do wish it was f/1.4.

How many APS-C lenses are there in the R mount?

The RF-S 18-45mm that resembles EF-M 15-45mm

RF-S 18-150mm that came from EF-M 18-150mm

And now, the brand new RF-S 55-210mm that came from EF-M 55-200mm

That is it!

No native APS-C UWA 11-22mm yet. Maybe they release it next year.

No prime lens (22mm neither 32mm) yet.

No macro lens (adapted from EF-M 28 mm) either.

No 3rd party APS-C AF lenses allowed (Sigma, Tamron or Viltrox)

Maybe the sentence Canon has shown no love for the EF-M system is not accurated.

The right one should be Canon has shown no love for APS-C.

I am not sure if R APS-C cameras will have a better lens selection than EF-M ones. For quite a while.

What about the feature set of the R50 isn’t good enough? Latest sensor with DigicX, much better AF, lighter, more FPS, EVF, 4k video? What am I missing?

The only feature set missing is lenses, but the 22mm is rumoured to be adapted to the RF system in 2023 anyways.

I still have my m50 but the next camera when it breaks is not gonna be an EFM Mount.

I have no doubt that the 22mm/11-22mm port over would come in 2023.

My own view is that 'porting' old lenses from yester-decade to today, in a new mount is a step backwards.

The lenses work well and is lightweight. If it’s kept affordable, it makes sense to port it over.

Re: EOS M 22mm f2 IQ?

The RF-S is out for less than a year, we need to be patient, the lenses will come. And perhaps they will allow Sigma to release apsc only lenses. This would reduce the bad press Canon has been getting recently without opening the FF space to third parties.

I don't think Canon have ever "allowed" Sigma to release lenses. Sigma reverse engineer their lenses to work while still not infringing patents.  There is nothing Canon can legally do to stop this, but the engineering takes time.

While I agree that it seems very unlikely that we will see any new products (bodies or lenses) in the M line, I wouldn't say "it was good while it lasted", but rather "it is good, while it still lasts (which might be for a long time yet)". My M6II is still going strong, with a bunch of great EF-M lenses, both Canon and Sigma. I have an R and an R7 as well, but I still use my M6II for trips, where I want to travel light, and for a lot of everyday use. I take my M6II to work with me most days, in a small bag with the 22 mounted, and the 56 in the bag too. I have never considered cameras to be investments, but rather as tools to be used. It still makes sense to buy an M camera and some EF-M mount lenses, if you think you'll get enough use out of them. A fair number of people buy one of the Fuji X100 line of cameras, with a fixed 35 (FF equivalent lens). I have always thought that my M, M6, or M6II with EF-M 22 could do all of that, and have the ability to take more lenses besides. Even if you just think you're going to use the 22 pancake, it could still make sense to get the M6Ii with that lens. I have taken thousands of shots with that combination, and expect to take thousands more before they (or I) give up the ghost.

Why? If the lenses are still good, which they are, it would be a step backwards not to port them over. I am very glad that Canon ported the EF-M 18-150 to RF-S mount. It works superbly on my R7. It might even be slightly better than my EF-M 18-150 (or it might be that I'm seeing the improved AF of the R7). The EF-M 11-22 is such a great lens that, again, it would be a step backwards for Canon not to port it to the RF-S mount.
