Canon 32/1.4 vs. Sigma 56/1.4

I am very impressed by the resolving power of the Canon 32/1.4 lens even wide open. Is the Sigma 56/1.4 equally resolving at equal apertures?

Yes, the Sigma is a wonderful portrait lens!

I don't have the Canon 32/1.4 to compare with my Sigma 56/1.4 but I would say it is an amazing lens and easily compares (and sometimes surpasses) the quality I used to get from my Canon full-frame "L" lenses. I know this is not a scientific analysis but I was so impressed with the Sigma 56/1,4 that I also bought the equally impressive Sigma 30/1.4 instead of the Canon 32/1.4.

The only "issue" that you may have with the Sigmas is weight - these beast are beautifully and solidly built! I recommend the Sigma 56/1.4 unreservedly

Mine is. Both are sharp at f/1.4.

The 56mm is so fast to get focus too !

I like my Sigma 56mm so much that none of the new R stuff tempts me because the new R camera bodies can not use the Sigma 56mm.

So sharp and so fast to get focus and nails focus at f/1.4.

Canon should reverse engineer that lens and try and figure out how Sigma did it !

Yes. Almost as good as the 32mm. Very, very close. A fantastic lens.

I don't mind changing them out either.

Went years without needing to clean a sensor then while putting the body in the dry box I dropped it with no lens on it then caught it.

Put a finger print on the sensor.

I was easy to clean though.

If it had a shutter that stayed closed it might have been destroyed when I did that.

I went to my LCS to order it this afternoon. They could not confirm availability from the supplier because it was after 5pm and they were closed.

Got to play with some very, very tempting Fuji cameras and lenses.

Pretty much yes I'd say as a former sigma 56mm owner and current 32mm owner.   Sold it only as I did not use it much and have the EFS 60 macro - miss f/1.4 though and is an absolutely cracking lens.

The 16mm sigma is very good too, but not quite up there wide open and is a lot bigger.  So sold that now I can use the 16mm RF lens on my R7 with IBIS and also on the R5.

32mm though is special and nothing remotely as good for the RF series at a sensible price point.

Well, there you go. Bought another lens for a reportedly deadman walking system...

Now, ask me what lens has me with the biggest woody in a long time.

Nice !

The camera mounts that will not mount the Sigma 56mm are deadman walking systems to me !

Oooh and those 3 control dials on the camera too If only had a joystick and eye-AF like the R10

Right ?

My M50II had good eye focus but I only used it for test shots.

For real shots I Iike the whole face to be in focus.

One eye in focus and one eye out of focus bugs me so I go for nose focus.

The eye focus features are for newbees ?

LOL   -  I'm no pro but not really a newbie

Eye tracking AF is transformational in the modern R series for action photography - not just faces but animals, bird in flight all sorts of subjects, intended and unintended.

YMMV

What is the lowest priced lens that can keep up with the new fast eye focus tracking ?

That you have used.

The Canon website says they are using a RF 50mm f/1.2 L for the focus performance tests ?

The DPR studio scene tests for all the R cameras so far were also done with that lens.

Who would put a $2000 lens on a R50 ?

This was just point and push the button.

Pretty much all of my lenses listed work very well with it - (apart from the macros in terms of speed). My adapted EF 70-200 II mint used copy was ~$900 and works brilliantly. The ability to accurately acquire focus quickly and first time is also much improved, not just speed.

I'm not saying one cant track with a M camera - but the recent R's are a big step forward for the uses I specified. My M6II works great for many things and is on my long term keeper plan - but the modern R's do excel and not just with $2000+ lenses. Duade Paton gives great examples also with more affordable lenses.

Who would put a $2000 lens on a R50 ?

I'd suggest just spend a little bit more, mint-used with warranty if necessary for a R10. Plus the modern bodies even at entry level take good pictures very well, so I don't see a need for multiple R5's

Meanwhile like the OP - my M6II shines with the great 32mm f/1.4 and 11-22 which one cannot get in R!

I actually pawed an R10 at my LCS (Local Camera Store, you know, Brick & Mortar) when I went in to pick up the Sigma. It felt good in the hand. Too bad about the lenses, though. I ain't buying into a system with lenses on par with and so far worse than what we endured from the inglorious EF-S range. No lenses f/2 or brighter, no buy.

Eye-focus is nice, I've got it my FF R body, but the lack of it on the M, M3 and now the M5 has not negatively impacted the in-focus keeper rate. Of course, I don't shoot action nor spray-and-pray. One technique -- I-focus, I call it -- to slow down things and give you time to compose and nail focus is to engage with and talk to your subject.

Get that .. fear with remote possible exception of 32mm, will stay that way in RFS in the smaller f/1.4 range.   M though misses that wider aperture very high IQ zoom also.
