Travel Choice

I love my x-t30ii and it's usually my go-to for travel. Recently though, I bought the xh2s for event photography. It's almost double the weight of the x-t30ii and now that I'm about to embark on a short trip to the beach, I'm wondering which camera to bring.

Caveats: I am NOT certain I'll encounter large birds in a matter of 4-5 days, but usually I at least come across one or two. IF I am lucky, possibly more, including birds in flight though my jam is more stationary birds.

I'm certain I will shoot landscapes and street shots. Regardless of which body I bring, I have not yet invested into anything over 300mm so the 70-300 will likely be on board, plus a 35mm f/2 and the 18-55 kit lens for ibis and versatility.

Any thoughts on which way to go? I leave on Wednesday the 8th, so need to decide by tomorrow night. Thank you!

This is a no-brainer for me. Go ahead and take the XH2s. Then see how you feel after the trip. Then you’ll know what to expect/do next time. You already know what the XT30 experience is like. Good luck!🍀

XH2s while heavier is more comfortable to hold...at least for me. I have the XE3 but I prefer using the XH2s..it has IBIS, better grip & better AF, EVF...basically everything is just better!

70-300 will balance well on XH2s while 35 & 18-55 will be great for street/landscape.

If overall weight is not a big issue, you could take both bodies and leave one at the accomodation etc...?

Actually, I like that thinking Since I'm already bringing the extra weight, makes sense to go for both bodies and have a well-rounded set of options!

Thanks for the feedback!

Short trip? Time to try something out!

It depends on how you are planning to travel. I spent 45 days traveling around Japan, leaving every few days for the next city. That's not a kind of lifestyle where you want to lug around lots of weight. I think I had about 1,5kg in photo material with me, and that's in the metal film SLR days. Just with the XH2S and the 70-300, you're nearly there.

Fortunately for you, it's a short trip. That's an entirely different matter. Take whatever you like and just lug it around. If you're really sorry about it, hey, you're nearly going home anyway.

My photography style is most likely very different from yours, but for my next trip I’ll be downsizing my X-Pro2 to an X-E4. Travel photography is always a compromise between what you'd ideally like to take along, and what would be most practical.

Thanks for the input! Normally I would be traveling like you do… I used to own a Ricoh GR. I would only take that and may be one small film camera. There are still trips like that, but not this particular one and I definitely wanted to take it vantage of the XH2S and its capabilities when it comes to wildlife.

in the end, I did pack those cameras and a couple of lenses. I think it’ll be worth it to have the weight in exchange for the flexibility of what it offers

thanks!
