Canon needs a compact walk around RF 35mm

From the reviews I've read, the f/1.8 is not it !

A lot of complaints about focus hunting....it needs a switch to lock out the macro range.

The 40mm f2.8 pancake is my favorite walk around EF lens....how bout one for the RF mount?

Or a standard 35mm compact "street" lens, f/2.8 would be fine.

Either would make the RP body a killer street combo.

Why did Canon leave such an essential "use type" out of it's RF lineup?

35 or 40mm and f2.8 with IS at $400 or less and I'm in.  Also DO NOT make a 'macro' lens. I don't want the extra size/weight just to get a feature I'll never use.

If "Canon needs" something it's maybe you not needing a Canon?

- Sony FE Sonnar T* 35mm f/2.8 ZA

- Samyang 35mm F/2.8 AF

Just buy the appropriate camera for your preferred glass.

Re: Canon needs a compact walk around RF 35mm

I'm also considering what to replace my EF 40mm f/2.8 with as it's kind of lost it's appeal with the RF adapter effectively doubling its size on the camera.

I really really like the 35mm focal length, so I will probably auto-buy the RF 35L when it comes out.  But I still want tiny walkabout lens that I can throw on the camera for scenarios where I'm more concerned about weight/bulk than IQ.  I'd actually really like a 28mm pancake similar in size to the old EF 40mm as I think that would be about right.

The RF 35/1.8 works just fine in street photography situations, focus is fast and accurate. Looks on to eyes super fast with R5 & R6 in ES-mode wide open. And the low weight makes it easy to operate with one hand only, no problems at all using this lens for street photo.

From my usage, the F1.8 is it!

A lot of complaints about focus hunting....

Never experienced that.

No, it really doesn't.

The 40mm f2.8 pancake is my favorite walk around EF lens....how bout one for the RF mount?

I liked that one too. I'm not sure whether I'd get one for RF. Maybe if it was $200 or less (I paid $179 for my EF version). But even then, it's too close to the 35 for me to use it much, just to lose a little bit of size and weight.

Or a standard 35mm compact "street" lens, f/2.8 would be fine.

The 35 F1.8 is not exactly big. It's bigger than the 16 and the 50, which are tiny, but it's still plenty small enough for a "street" lens, and F1.8 is significantly better than F2.8. And the IS and close-focusing capabilities are really useful (at least to me).

Either would make the RP body a killer street combo.

The 35 is especially useful on the RP, and the R, because of the IS.

Why did Canon leave such an essential "use type" out of it's RF lineup?

They really didn't. The 35 F1.8 is pretty good for this. I don't know what reviews you've read, but they seem to have given you a mistaken impression of the lens.

Re: Canon needs a compact walk around RF 35mm

Agree about size and weight of the 35 1.8, was thinking about getting it but enough complaints out there about focus hunting to give me pause. I suppose it has to do with how the lens is used whether it's a problem or not.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Canon needs a compact walk around RF 35mm

Thanks for your perspective. I may end up getting it since I don't see anything else out there for 35mm street in the RF mount. This one looks good, but of course it's manual

The ideal for me would be a new Canon RF f/2 pancake 35 or 40.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the RF 35. But a pancake is also attractive. I love my EF-M 22 on my M6II. A pancake for the new R8, if that turns out to be a really small camera, would be welcome.

Canons business model.

The 35mm focal length isn't the most challenging for AF.  Canon cameras are pretty confident when it comes to low light AF.  Maybe you should just buy one with a good return policy and see if the AF works for you.

If you want fast AF there are no small options. In that case you have to switch brands.

Nikon has one for their Z system, for less than $300 and f/2.0.  It also has "some" weather sealed, unlike the scamming Canon does in this price range.  I would be more than happy to give up IS with just IBIS.

Just buy the appropriate camera for your preferred glass.

You can't just switch to a new camera system everytime you want "one" lens.

It would be smart business decision for a camera manufacturer to listen to its customer base vs. just some marketing and sales people.

I haven't experienced any of the focus issues that you reference but I also haven't had time to shoot with it extensively.   In any case, the Canon Direct Store has refurbished RF 35's in stock at a really great price.   If you want to give one a try, this is a low risk route. The refurbished products typically are like "new" and I've never had problems with any of the refurbished lenses I've purchased.

You don't have to switch, adding is good enough.  I just got an A7IV just to run the 50mm GM.  I can run my Sigma EF lenses via MC11 on it as well.  For me the EF mount is still the most essential aspect of the Canon brand as it allows for cross brand shooting with a lot of my lenses.

It would be smart business decision for a camera manufacturer to listen to its customer base vs. just some marketing and sales people.

It's also smart for a customer to choose the brand making that smart business decision.

I got my 35mm as a refurb. Great value and size IMO, never had any AF issues with use on my RP.

Do you actually own one, or have used one? Your description is nothing like my experience of the 35/1.8 on my R5 and RP.

For myself, it was what Dustin Abbott said.

In the part « Conclusion ». The word « underwhelmed ». Saying that it wasn’t as good as the  EF 35mm f/2 IS.

For me the price would be 549 Euros. Which is maybe 200 Euros more than I paid for my EF 35mm f/2 IS, four years ago.

Dustin Abbott makes it sound only marginally better than the 50 RF, which I could have for 229 Euros.
