Cracked Samsung NX 50-200 Lens - Is there any hope for a repair?

Hey all,

Well, it happened. 6 years of owning this camera and this particular lens (50-200) and it came face to face with the concrete of our parking lot on Saturday.

I had proposed to my Girlfriend earlier in the day, and in the excitement between setting up the NX500 on a tripod, capturing the moment and then foolishly placing it wrapped up in my jacket in the trunk (rather than in the case I had with me!!!), and then forgetting it was there, whipped my jacket out, the camera goes flying and smack, the horror below:

*Sigh*

It's a great shame as obviously this line is discontinued and hard to come by at a semi-reasonable price these days. It's also got some sentimental value as it's been part of my profession to an extent. It's very much unused these days (this was the first time in about a year and a half I had used the camera) but as I said, it's a shame.

So, is there any hope for me or anyone else to be able to repair this? Or even re-selling it at a low price? It appears to just be the front element that's cracked and nothing else. Thankfully I do have a couple of other NX lenses, but nothing remotely telephoto like this one, which is tempting me to replace this with an EF lens adapter + appropriate telephoto lens replacement from that line.

if that is the same one then I would just buy another used one. Congrats on the engagement. Now you have an excuse, I mean a valid reason, to either buy a new lens or a new camera, how could your fiancé possibly disagree! Al the best.

It's probably an optical illusion, but to my mind that looks like a "protection filter" fitted to the front of the lens that has done it's job … would need to see a side-on or oblique view to be sure, but it's just possible that the lens isn't damaged at all!

Do you have a pair of rubber gloves - thicker than you'd use for doing the dishes if possible! Or an old pair of leather ones.

Rubber gloves did the trick - thank you so much Peter!!! The lens underneath is intact - just has some small dust particles on the surface!

Be sure to check focus accuracy and alignment. There's a chance it suffered some damage after, what sounds like, a pretty bad fall.

2. One DYI I've used is a rubber band wrapped around the filter which provides  a better grip.

We should start up the discussion again about whether to have a protective filter on lenses or not….because in the past the majority of posts were to have no filter on the lens!
