Received a used EF-S 55-250 STM today and it is quite nice as a light lens for bird observation, thanks for the recommandations.

I used the EF400 5.6 before but this one is more versatile and has IS.

On the M6II I still can crop a lot with 250mm, very sharp even full open on 250mm. From my experience with extenders I doubt there should be a gain on this class of lenses, in particular with the actual postprocessing software.

I believe I was the first one here to bring attention to the quality and value of the EF-S 55-250IS with this post in 2014.

I think the M6ii plus the EF-M 32 is a great combo.

M6ii

-32MP sensor

-fast AF with touch and drag feature

-big battery among Canon M cameras

-rangefinder style (looks smaller)

-can be had as an everyday camera

32/1.4

-great optics (the best in M mount)

- this lens together with the EF-M22mm/2 plus the any of the Sigma Trio could literally keep you in Canon M without minding any updates.

Add a Godox 350c flash and boy you are all set.

All set with the above? No, I don't think so!

What do you recommend beyond 56mm, keeping the dame IQ level? No zoom lens allowed...

Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6L is just amazing on both M6 and R.

DOF is razorthin at 300 mm f/5.6.

Hmmmh, many seem to think of the EF 70-300 as the worst L zoom around. I have no experience with it.

The worst L zooms are without any doubt either 24-70 f/2.8L mk I or 17-40L of those I have used.

70-300L is a bit heavy and expensive for a 4-5.6 but that is basically all the negatives I can think of. Some people are also just snobs and look down at anything slower than f/2.8.

I am also wondering if people are mistaking it for the 70-300 DO, the L is by far much sharper than the DO and requires less of post processing.

The positives are:

  • Beautiful DOF
  • Amazing sharpess, there is practically no reason to stop it down
  • Out of this world contrast
  • Short for a weatherproofed 300 mm L zoom.

I have 100-400mm IS mk 1, but rather enjoy my Sony RX10 IV for tele because of size and weight.

55-250mm STM is currently my tele addition on M6 II and EF-M 55-200mm on M100.

Thanx for coming back on this KEG!

I may give it a try, if I can find a nicely priced one used.

How does it balance on the M6ii?

Very nicely but of course the camera is basically a lens cap so you hold the lens with one hand.

They test them before they send them out.

Sure can not say the same about Canon.

They are well stocked with M6IIs. 12 and almost all (11 out of 12) in "like new" condition.

I even mount the M6II on my 400 f:4 DO II.

According to the "balance" theory I should have to fix 2 kg underneath :-D.

Check this thread: Is sharpness in photography becoming a problem?

M6 II is an excellent camera.

There are very few situations where I cannot take a good picture with my M50.

There are better cameras, larger, more expensive, heavier. But M cameras are good enough.

Indeed.

A well known Belgian photographer once said "the worse thing people can say about my photographs is that they are sharp".

But for birds IMO it is still a requirement in most cases.

M cameras are (were) more than sufficient for almost all photographic tasks, but sadly enough Canon saw more benefit elsewhere.

They just used M as a mirrorless lab, without risking their core business. And when they finally found out how to do it right with the R5/R6 - or found the moment was there - they appeared as the winners.

True! Much in the world of photography is better if it is sharp.

But it shouldn’t be the only redeeming quality.

I think the following quote says it quite succinctly…

"Every time someone tells me how sharp my photos are, I assume that it isn't a very interesting photograph. If it were, they would have more to say." -anon

Or maybe it was best said by a well known American photographer…

There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept”  -A. Adams

Yes, monetarily!

They just used M as a mirrorless lab, without risking their core business. And when they finally found out how to do it right with the R5/R6 - or found the moment was there - they appeared as the winners.

IMHO they “did it right” with the M Series too.  The R System however allowed them to expand their market greatly.  It was a necessary progression.

Birds are so beautiful and such excellent creatures to make calming pictures with.

Hang them on the wall at the doctor's office.

I am always taking a picture of someone's art or work.

Birds are indeed fascinating. We have photos and paintings of our fine feathered friends throughout our house too.

Interesting thing is that they can be so stressful to photograph. Especially the raptors! They’re just not very cooperative and they always put both you and your equipment to the test. The results are rewarding though!

What do you recommend beyond 56mm, keeping the dame IQ level? No zoom lens allowed...

Sigma EF 50-100mm f/1.8 Art

Sigma EF 70-200mm f/2.8 Sports

Canon Ef 100-400mm mkII

White EF L primes in the 500-800mm range will do fine as well.

Not exactly M-form-factor!? 🙃

EF 85mm f/1.8 has always been a staple. Yes it needs to be stopped down for max sharpness, but it does get Really sharp. It’s still fairly compact, and autofocus is very fast. Its twin brother the EF 100mm f/2 is also an option.

The EF-S 55-250 has been enjoyed by zillions of people. The STM is quite capable, and can even be turned into a birder with a “Rexley Special” TC.

I still own options 1, 3, and 4 above. For a 100mm I had the (much larger) EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro. A splendid lens. A person could even go for the venerable EF 135mm f/2 if they wanted a fast prime beyond 100mm (I have the biggie Sigma EF 135mm f/1.8 Art instead). There will be no shortage of used copies of the Canon with the recent release of the RF version!

These are all still very viable solutions for EF-M beyond 56mm.

R2

I was chasing a EF 100mm F2, but I had 2 used deals gone bad. 😩 Luckly I got my money back from #2!

I gave the tele end a second thought and, figured that I need image stabilisation. Hence I bought 2nd hand Tamron 85mm F1.8 VC. Bigger and heavier than the Canon 85 or 100mm but good against shaky hands... 😉

What a pity that I am in a medical treatment away from home, so I can't give it a spin. Well, weather sucks anyway... 😞

Get well soon! Spring is coming. A little bit of GAS satisfaction is a very good medicine I guess. That Tamron is a nice lens with a beautiful rendering on full frame cameras. It will work fine on M as well.

Thanx for cheering me up! 🤗

Thx R2

being able to use 100L on both M6II (160 FOV) and RP (100 FOV) is a blessing and for some events that are not sports action movement I can leave my 70-200 at home because I have the reach of 32.5 mpxls and 160 FOV. For macro work too, that 160 fov working distance with 32.5 mpxl is great!
