The X100v hype pushing prices to crazy leves

Yes, great camera, but people paying between $1750-2200 US dollars for one in the used market makes me wonder if this could make Fuji put the brakes on the possible release of a new model.

Why bother with version VI if the current one is hotter than ever?

I guess we could blame Tiktokers for making Fuji the new Leica.

It is really something how this camera has come on lately. I've randomly checked since it was released and don't think I ever saw it actually in stock (you could always order one, get on a list, and wait). I know, supply chain, etc., but there is a lot of money being left on the table here. To your point, it seems that it would be foolish to develop a new model when the old one would sell like hotcakes if they could just get it out.

I think this may be relevant to the situation with the X100V:

https://www.indeed.com/career-advice/career-development/scarcity-principle

The X100V did not suddenly become a better camera but the fact that it has become hard to get may in itself drive demand unrelated to its utility as a photographic tool.

Exactly. "Fear or missing out".

Classic example when you want to buy or rent a house there is always somebody that "already gave the paperwork" before you but the seller says "if you pay today I might cancel the other party deal" lol.

And this hype is also getting to other Fuji models.

My wife's best friend is not even a photographer but saw somewhere an X-E4 and love it, so she bought a new silver kit with the 27mm for $1500 dollars.

The camera has been unopen in the box since she bought it 4 months ago and she told me the other day: "I am planning to use it someday this year". LoL

Fujifilm are not making any money from this craze. They have no stock. This is resellers profiteering.

Fuji will either restart production of the X100V, or launch an updated version, depending on factors known only to insiders.

There has been a huge amount of speculation already on this forum about if and when a replacement model will come, and what features it might have.

When I bought mine in 2021 I did have to order it, but not a long wait as I recall. Maybe someone on here has bought one more recently and can advise how long it took from order to receipt?

I agree with the scarcity theory. While some may call it hype, often caused and increased by social media, there is a demand. To create such a demand, the product itself has to offer something a bit special that people need or stoke an inner desire. I suspect, but obviously do not know, that in photographic terms there is a mass desire to own a special product.

All I can say is hats off to Fuji for designing a winner. If creating a winner makes them a stronger brand and stronger commercially to continue developing new photographic products I'm all for it.

none of that money goes to fuji though...bringing out a new generation of x100 would easily ride the hype created by the V and sell immediately, even at a larger launch price than the V, but still lower than all the scalpers are asking. fuji just need to figure out their production lines, as they may have grown beyond their production capabilities recently...

The “if” is the key word. They can’t, otherwise they would, and then prices wouldn’t have risen.

I bought my X100V a year ago and it was already hard to get hold of. Supply-side issues were already significant and they haven’t improved. It was only much later that demand went up, and with no supply of new items buyers had to turn to the used market, where supply was still massively outstripped, so prices have risen and certain other models have picked up some of the over demand, so they’ve risen too.

If Fuji could crank out X100Vs right now they would be doing it (and the used market wouldn’t have inflated). Similarly, if they can get going asap on the next model they will.

There have been a ton of threads on this. Fuji doesn’t gain from the inflated used market. There’s no conspiracy. It will pass.

Back when it was released in 2020 it took 10 days to get from Amazon.

Ordered: 3-4-2020

Shipped: 3-14-2020

Purchased for MSRP of $1,399.95

I always try to get new models on release day.

Fast forward to present day and prices are insane:

Fuji the new Leica? The latter is much more expensive. As for the rest, it is the market at work.

It’s Leica light… I mean a new M is $9000 these days. Compared to that the X100 series is a deal if it’s only about style.

What’s going to happen in Fuji will raise the price on the next X100.

It’s not foolish to make a new one if they are having trouble getting parts for the old one.

That type of attitude is what keeps the industry afloat.  People buy a new camera for a one week vacation and only use it then.  It’s crazy to me.

Yes, it is, just need to see all those Instagrammers and tiktokers using their X100 cameras as fashion accessories. They bought them not to take pictures with them but to pose with them LOL

Yes, the prices are crazy. That is why when the 6 is announced, hopefully, in April, I will pre-order as soon as they are posted on B&H or Amazon.

That announcement will be scalpers’ worst nightmare. I still believe if Fuji can't keep up with X100v’s demand, why rush to release a new model?

"rush"? It has been 3 years since the 5 was released. Fujifilm tends to update the X100's on a 3-year cycle.
