How to adjust flash compensation on D7500

I recently bought a speedlite for my Nikon D7500 and the flash is fully automatic, with no buttons or controls on the flash. How do I adjust the flash compensation on the camera? Everytime I press and hold the flash button and and scroll to adjust the flash compensation, it'll open up the in-built flash and not adjust anything at all. Any advice would really be helpful.

The flash is a promaster 7200edf

I used a Metz 36 with a Panasonic. When the flash was mounted, it just used the FEC, the same as controlling the pop-up. I always had it set to forced flash.

This may or not help

I don't know the D7500 but on my ex D7100 you could put the pop up flash into commander mode which may or may not have some control over your flash.

My Nikon D7500 recently received a speedlite that is totally automatic and has no buttons or knobs. How can I change the camera's flash compensation? Every time I go to change the flash compensation while pressing and holding the flash button, the built-in flash activates without allowing me to make any adjustments. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

It is a Promaster 7200edf flash.
