That said, human beings are creatures of habit. We hate new things. We hate change, especially when they tend to wipe out a tradition that's been around so long. I still like drip versus brewing coffee via those now-famous pods. But when I am having wall to wall meetings, pods are so handy.

I don't agree with you on this. I love new things and change. Because an idea has been around the past 2000 years does not mean its correct or best. With an attitude like that there would never be any progress in the world.  I was an EE and loved new things and change.  It made my work very interesting.

Had the 5d4. Went to the R with a top lcd. Never used it on the R. All that info is in the viewfinder.

now I’m using R6ii. Don’t miss the top lcd at all.

As I shoot a lot of fast-paced action, I like glancing at the R5’s top LCD as I’m bringing the camera up to my eye. That way I don’t have to pause to check settings once I have the camera in shooting position. Instead I can get off snap shots much more quickly this way (important in my line of work).

I have the R6ii also, and do miss that function (and the R5’s electronic shooting mode “button” as well), but can live without them of course. I liken it to having a Head Up display in the car. Really nice to have, but not necessary in order to drive the car!

Remarkable.

Almost no one ever says what was originally correct, "Head Up Display" (not "heads up").

Ha! Thanks. I'll give you a "Heads Up" if I notice any other idiomatic discrepancies!

Perhaps you never "hone in" on anything either. (It's "home in".)

"Starting from ground zero" makes more sense in a way, even if it was originally "starting from square one".

The main purpose of adding this is to speed the thread towards its automatic end.

I'm someone who usually has the back screen closed on my 6D MkII,

I didn't read every post in this thread and it appears to have gone off the rails at some point, but isn't this little point from the OP highly relevant for someone who wants or needs a top display?  I'm in the camp of those who forget the top display is even there, but I can't imagine not using the rear display so there is that...

That makes a lot more sense.

Just bought the R6ii, and coming from a 5dii, thought i'd miss the top LCD, but you get used to it not being there.

Nothing to miss. The R3 has a top display too. But I do miss the small rear one.

I shoot weddings and that top LCD, for me, is a MUST. Things are happening and changing way too fast to not have the settings at a constant glance to make exposure changes within a second while anticipating the next shot. By the time you press that Q button and evaluate your settings, then make changes, the moment is gone.

You can have the rear screen permanently display your settings instead of live view.

Moving to FV mode too may help with fast past situations.  But the EVF and Live View can show current settings without much issue too.

The top display shows only a smallish fraction of settings available in the Q menu. Moreover same setting can be interlaced on the live view...

I get what you're saying. Just a glance at the top deck LCD to check the shutter speed/aperture/ISO combination when you know the light is changing is very helpful when you're at an event where things are moving fast. I like having that ability without needing to lift the camera to my eye, or to keep my rear screen flipped to show the display.
