Fujifilm X-H2 for video—how am I supposed to use this thing?

I'm coming from the X-T3, where video settings were straightforward: switch to video mode, set ISO and shutter speed accordingly with the big knobby knobs on top, set video format options in the main and/or Q menu, etc.

Maybe I don't understand how this was designed to be used for video, but I'm having a tough time with the X-H2. I've managed to fumble around and discover how to change all the settings I want, but it seems cumbersome to change them again for different occasions.

My biggest issue is with shutter speed—I have to flick my thumb over the command dial hundreds of times to set the SS to something high (like 1/480 for 240 fps recording). Is this how we are expected to operate this?

And am I correct in understanding that I'm not even allowed to go below 1/50 shutter speed?

Don't get me wrong—this camera does a lot of things well. It's very impressive. Maybe I just don't get how it was designed to be used for video. Is it more auto-settings-friendly or something?

Some insight from X-H2 or X-H2s users would be appreciated. What's your typical camera workflow for setting up shots? What buttons/dials do you use to get things set right? Thank you!

General rule of thumb keeping the shutter speed as two times of the fps. Since lowest fps allowed by camera is 25 slowest speed allowed is 1/50. This is called 180 degree shutter angle in videography.

I have not used the video functions much.

My humble opinion is

Set your camera to M and iso to 1000 since it is the native iso of the product which gives the highest available dynamic range. set your shutter speed double the fps you shoot 25 fps 1/50 60fps 1/120. To be able to do that with shallow depth of field in the day light you need a variable ND. If you use fix nd you need to change it each time the light changes so not comfortable in the end.

Movie baseline settings

I just posted a baseline for movie shooting.

Not specific to the X-H2.

Maybe it's partially useful for you.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest as well. I use the custom settings exclusively for my video presets. C1 24fps 1/48 C2 60fps 1/60 C3 120p 1/240. C4 & C5 are 24&60 but with ProRes, C6 6.2k open gate. In the settings menu make sure to select that the custom setting is video mode and not photo mode. I reserve C7 for any kind of photo or video setting that happens to be specific to what I'm doing before I head out. Because I know what C1-C6 are and they never change it's just a flip of the dial. I thought after years with the regular Fuji dials going back to pasm would be a nightmare. With the ability to program seven custom settings I'd say this is actually my preferred control format. Whenever I need to use my XT4 for a second camera, I actually find myself fumbling around with the dials and makes me much less efficient.

Based on your description it sounds like you have the “Flickerless S.S. Setting” turned on. Turn that off and you’ll be able to change the shutter speed more readily.

Re: Fujifilm X-H2 for video—how am I supposed to use this thing?

Thanks for the reply esosturk. I’m familiar with which settings I should choose (and why), my question is more about how with this particular camera. It’s more of a user interface question I suppose. With other cameras I’ve had no issues finding and choosing these settings, and changing them when needed. With this camera it’s clunky and cumbersome, which makes me think I simply don’t know the best workflow for doing so. It makes me think it’s designed for a different type of shooter or something, but I really don’t know. Looking for other users of the camera and how they operate it for video.

coming from xpro1/2/3 xe1/2 xt2/3

i have to say custom modes are useful in studio but i miss the straightforward menu if previous series.

having separate menu for photo and video, as well 1s my menu for both, Custom modes for both, missing a lot the clickable dial zoom focus or switch between MF assist modes (peak, split, etc)

it's seem impossible to leave some settings out from C1/7 like af modes or WB.

missing an instant view on important setting (aperture, speed, etc on top lcd wit default settings when in movie control)

hating rhe new lcd always stuck with usb cables or hdmi output

really, while globally I like the custom.modes, Fujifilm implementation seem quite confusing

Thank you! This solved two of my gripes (this was also the reason I couldn't drop the SS below 1/50—now I can)

yeah, I'm with you on these. I really miss the easy switching / turning off of MF assist. actually, MF assist doesn't even seem to work in video mode at all (works in stills mode fine).

I also can't get any information to show up on the LCD screen other than the recording mode and time remaining at the top unless I turn on 'large indicators' (EVF is fine; all the 'custom display settings' seem to affect EVF and not LCD).

I'm starting to wonder if there are a lot of bugs that haven't been worked out, but again, it could be me and some odd setting I have switched on/off.

you can change this in screen setting/sub monitor setting

but while i can use an X-t3 out of the box and it's perfect for my use, i had to spend a lot of time browsing and setting the menus to have a workable X-h2s

I'm starting to wonder if there are a lot of bugs that haven't been worked out, but again, it could be me and some odd setting I have switched on/off.
