Dropped my M6ii

I was on the Outer Banks about a month ago and was carrying my 2 year old M6ii with the 18-150 zoom on it. As I went to put the camera strap around my neck I dropped the camera on a concrete sidewalk.

At first the camera seemed fine but I eventually discovered that one of the three plastic bayonet lands (is this the correct word?) on the 18-150 lens had broken off.  As a result, the lens doesn't seat normally.  I've been using the camera for a month and occasionally, it will misbehave, but so far, it always starts working normally when I gently twist the lens to ensure it is seated against the contracts.

I'm tempted to just live with it but am curious how hard it would be to replace the bayonet?

Thanks, Bob

34 sold. Looks like a common accident.

To OP, the mount is pretty straightforward to remove. Sometimes the anchors for the screws also crack. I have used superglue on some of these screw points to reinforce them.

I wouldn't use the lens at this point and fix the mount asap. If may come off completely it will damage the lens further.

Or worse still, the sensor, if a bit of plastic breaks off inside.

Sorry to hear about that, but glad it all survived!  I haven’t checked the back of my 18-150, but I did replace the back cap on my 55-250 STM (Rexley mod), and it was a piece of cake.  Sourced the cap from Fleabay.

Best of luck with your little project!

They designed that little hole on the end of the cable so you can use a toothpick to slide it in and out.

Best of luck with your repair !

Re: Dropped my M6ii

I dropped my M5 with the 18-150 installed. Broke all 3 flanges on the lens. Ordered the piece that was broken. Easy repair. As mentioned, 4 small screws. reattach the ribbon connector and tighten the screws. Lens has worked well since for over a year. I think the part was less than $40. Good luck.

Thanks again for all the advice, and especially to M100 for providing the link to the replacement part on eBay. After some delay, I obtained the part and replaced it on the lens today. Initial testing indicates that the repair was successful. Time will tell if it holds.

The 4 small screws holding the bayonet mount to the lens were so tight that I was unable to remove them using my current set of jewelers screwdrivers which have small diameter grips (presumably to prevent over-torquing tiny screws).

I ordered a set of Ryobi screwdrivers and was able to apply enough torque to remove the screws without stripping the heads.

The little ribbon cable connector was also a challenge. I used a paperclip to remove it. That was relatively easy, but attaching the new one was not easy. I eventually figured out how to maneuver it into the slot and press it home using the tiny Ryobi flathead screwdriver. This required time, patience, bright lighting, magnifying reading glasses, and three hands.

And of course, no repair like this would be complete without dropping one of the tiny black screws on a plush dark carpet, requiring 15 minutes to find it because it somehow ended up 6 feet from where I dropped it.

You need JIS screwdrivers. I assume that stands for "Japanese Industrial Standard". The screws in your camera are NOT Phillips screws.

The type of those screwdrivers is not specified, but they are probably Phillips drivers. Phillips screwdrivers are designed to cam out. They do not fit properly in a JIS screw, and will probably damage the screw head.

Didn't know that, thanks!
