Upgrade from X-T2 to X-T4 or X-T5?

I started the X-T2 as a trial with a minimal set of lenses (18-55, 23 f2, 50-230). OK yeah, I love the Fuji! I have no issue at all with the X-T2 images, but the battery life is killing me. AF could be better and I REALLY miss IBIS from my old Panasonic, and I'd like a larger evf.

I have all but decided on a used X-T4 due to the $1000 or so USD savings (after tax). That would enable me to add used lenses, 35 1.4 R, 50 f2, and probably the 16 1.4 R. It seems like an easy choice right?

Is the X-T5 worth the premium? The remaining differences all seem like "nice to have" things. I have not handled either camera. I am a hobby shooter using the camera for hiking and travel. I travel internationally once per year or so and I tour by motorcycle with a camera.

Thanks!
Greg.

I use the X-T4 professionally, and unless you plan on printing larger than 20 x 30 on a regular basis, the extra resolution of the X-T5 won't be a factor. Also, the X-T4 will take a grip to greatly increase battery life, as well as give you a little more mass for stability. Shutter is whisper quiet, which is a bonus for me.  Overall a great camera, especially at that price.

The grip is a factor to be honest, it irks me they left the grip option off of the X-T5. This means you basically need a whole new camera for big lenses.

As long as you don't mind the flippy screen and the size of the body being somewhat larger, seems pretty reasonable to me that you go with the X-T4 to save cash and give you added lens options. Low light shooting accuracy will be considerably improved, as well as battery life.

Your obvious first step is a spare battery because although the newer cameras are better, it isn't out of sight better.

I've just stepped up from T2 to H2.  IBIS makes a huge difference.  The T2 sensor had Fuji cyan sky and the H2 sensor has fixed that.  Thom Hogan says the T4 sensor fixed it too but I skipped a generation.  IBIS is worth having.  The H2/T5 sensor is said to be better for detailed foliage too.

The difference in size & weight of the X-T4 vs the X-T5 isn't much at all. The fact it also uses the larger battery takes care of the problem you have with the X-T2 munching through batteries. Even with the bigger battery having a spare is a good idea. It does have a flippy screen while the X-T5 has one like what is on your X-T2. I've not found this to be a problem although many seem to. I added a smallrig handgrip to mine & find that with it I have no need for the battery grip. For my money the X-T4 is a great deal at $1000. Good luck with your decision.

One more thing I believe the EVF is the same size for the X-T4 & X-T5.

Yea thanks to summarize the features I care about seem to be met with the T4. I slightly prefer a flip down lcd but that’s made up for by the grip which I do want.

the only thing that would sway me is markedly better eye detection autofocus. It’s very hard to tell exactly how much better it is on the newer model

please foregive typos from phone keyboard

I realize it differs to everyone, but for me, the improvement in autofocus alone would make the X-T5 worth the upgrade.

For hiking and travel, the X-T4 has perfectly fine autofocus capability. I have used it in low-light stage work extensively, and it delivers consistently.

Re: Upgrade from X-T2 to X-T4 or X-T5?

Thanks much you've all given me a lot to think about, I'm going to rest on it to make sure I'm not letting the lower price of the X-T4 cloud my judgement.

I watched a few youtube videos. Of the things I care about, the X-T5 is better. Size, Flip-down LCD, Eye AF, animal AF, marginally better IBIS and battery life. And more pixels is always better. The X-T4 has only the grip option and lower price that I really care about.

The X-T4 price difference isn't really huge and it would be nice to just stick with a camera for a longer time. I briefly got a Sony A7c, hated it, and lost time and money selling it. I played it safe with the X-T2 as I bought it cheap.  I could easily go another several generations if I just buy new now, knowing that I actually like to use Fuji. I will mull over these 1st world problems for a week or so.

Sound analysis and plan in all aspects. The bigger battery in the X-T4 and T5 is a big change (even with spares) - the efficiency (shots per charge) between those two bodies is minor compared to the T2 battery. Same with IBIS... you're getting almost as good performance with the T4 as the T5.

If it was me and you're keeping the T2 (I'm keeping mine as the spare), it would drive me crazy going back and forth from flippy screen to the flip down screen. But that's just me. Animal eye AF is great - at least it works really well with my dog. Not for full sprint dog run purposes, but for regular situations where the animal isn't super active.

You have a tough decision there!

This video can be helpful... and is quite entertaining. You'll want to have translation on:

Eye-AF much better with the new generation...the XT4 eye AF is barely usable imo and I pretty much stopped using it.

I'd say go for the XT5...battery life is good enough that you may not need to even carry an extra battery...but that depends on your usage obviously...always good to have a spare. XT5 design is also more refined with the grip and shutter button placement and being slightly lighter.

The XT-4 does have it's advantages though especially price.
