Since no one else made a suggestion, I'll offer one:

Photograph A Motto

A spot of nail polish on my phone charging cord easily tells me which side should be facing up when I plug it in.

Interesting....  On one of the USB cables that I use for my mirrorless cameras I wrote the word "UP" in ink.  It was only that one cable that needed it; the other ones I can identify which way is up with the USB marking.

The USB-C connector has no up or down orientation. Line up the connector properly, and you never have to flip it over to plug it in — the ”right orientation” is either orientation.

Also, the USB-C cable has the same connector on both ends, so you don't have to figure out which end goes where.

I was thinking about the USB-A connector. That's the one I wrote "UP" on, for that one cable.

I checked on my iPhone cable too. It's got a USB-A connector on one side. I assumed since he put a red dot on the up side, that that was the one he was talking about. It's hard to tell from his picture, but that's what I assumed.

Sounds good...yeah the other side on my iPhone cable can go in either way; that is the USB-C connection.  On the USB-A connector side it connects to an adapter that I plug into an outlet on the wall.

I just bought a second backup cable for the phone on Ebay.  It also has an adapter to plug into a cigarette lighter in the car.

Both my phone and my tablet have a Micro USB port. One side is longer than the other, so I have to be careful how the charging cords and OTG cables are plugged in.

You can damage the device if you plug them in upside down.

I am quite surprised when reading what you wrote above.

The USB-A connector is “keyed” and fits only one way in a port that has a plastic “lip” to prevent wrong-side insertion. I did that once and burned the port and damaged the USB card on my previous home-assembled PC.

Ashley, yes...I only know it like you know it...a USB-A connector can only be installed one way.  That's why I marked "UP" on one of my cables (on the USB-A connector side), so I didn't force it in incorrectly and damage something.

Yeah, I know that's standard.

However, I think I have an exception. Look at the photo below.

Forgive the very low IQ. This connector goes in either way and provides charge. Perhaps it's not designed for that, but it works.

I'm still wondering how we got onto this subject.

Maybe it's because we live on different sides of the planet.   Actually all kidding aside...who knows...the connectors we have and use might be different than what you have.  I've never seen a connector like the one you show.

Neither had I until recently.

I think they're usually the same.
