Histogram in Manual Mode Fujifilm X-S10

The Histogram does not work correctly in Manual mode. The Histogram appears on the screen, but it does not change when the aperture or shutter is changed. The Histogram DOES works in Aperture and Shutter Priority) Anyone had this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

This is a Fuji feature. You need to turn on exposure preview in manual mode or something like that. If that is off the viewfinder is always bright, always the same and the histograms and other exposure assistance always shows correct exposure.

Edit - I think.

Turn on PREVIEW EXP/WB IN MANUAL MODE in the wrench > screen setup menu.

Make sure that NATURAL LIVE VIEW is off for a “what you see is what you get” view (and for the highlight warning blinkies to work properly).

FYI I'll link to one of Erik's earlier posts on such settings advice. This here tip may serve you well in days to come. Since I had initially set blinkies to 'off' for the distraction they made while composing. I hope this works the same for an S10.

Re: Histogram in Manual Mode Fujifilm X-S10

Thanks -- Yes, if I turn PREVIEW EXP/WB IN MANUAL MODE 'on', and turn NATURAL LIVE VIEW 'off', the histogram does function. However, what I want is for the histogram to work without having to turn PREVIEW EXP on. The viewfinder and the display become too dark to see the subject, unless the aperture is set wide open. It is impossible to see anything at f/11, for example.
Do you know of a way to have the histogram work in Manual (M) mode without having PREVIEW EXP on? It works correctly in all the other modes (S,A, etc.), so it seems like a bug if it does work in M mode.

If you set the exposure correctly, the preview shouldn't be dark at all. The image in the EVF should look the same no matter what aperture is set. if you're seeing a dark image, you're taking a dark image. That's kinda the point of  a "what you see is what you get" exposure preview. Make sure all your exposure parameters are set correctly, if you stop the aperture way down, you will have to slow the SS down or raise the ISO up.

Exactly this.  If you cannot see what is going on in the viewfinder you won't see it in the picture you are about to take.

It is a bind when you move to using a flashgun as the main illuminant.

Yes, I fully understand 'what you see is what you get', but why can this be turned off, and still have the histogram work? I ALWAYS want the Histogram to work, but I rarely want the view-finder to darken down.

I am using flash units in a studio, shooting in M mode at f/11 (because I want total control over Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO), and the viewfinder is unusably dark.  I don't want he camera is showing me what f/11, but I do want the Histogram to move.

Other camera brands have the option of turning Preview off, and still having a working histogram. Why is this option missing on Fujifilm?

I can't understand what you are using the ambient light histogram for when ambient is hugely underexposed and you are relying on flashlight.

Well, if you’re using flash, maybe you should have mentioned that?

Not sure about other cameras, but the histogram generally represents the jpeg rendering you are seeing on your screen. If the exposure preview is off, the histogram isn’t going to respond. I’m not sure what the histogram is going to do for you in that situation anyway. If you’re interested in knowing the ambient light exposure then I think you’d want the preview on (and the histogram working). The histogram isn’t going to predict the flash exposure. With the preview off in manual mode, the exposure meter will still indicate the metered ambient light value.

Re: Histogram in Manual Mode Fujifilm X-S10

I use the Histogram because it is a very useful tool for ambient light exposure (better than the '+-' indicator.). Yes I would not expect a Histogram to predict the flash exposure. The camera is not controlling the flash units (the flash power level can be controlled for each individual flash unit independently of the camera). Often Flash is just being used to fill in the ambient light.
So, it is useful to use a Histogram to meter the ambient light without having the viewfinder darken, and without the need to turn Exposure Preview ON and OFF.
However, it appears what I am asking for is not possible. Many thanks for your patient responses.
