Rusty screw
10

I opted for a quite dramatic rendition of this rusty Phillips screw:

Here a complete view of it:

It's part of the locking mechanism of these secateurs:

The screw itself has a diameter of around 6 mm. First and second pictures uncropped, third one quite obviously cropped (top and bottom only).

First one is a stack of 70 images, second one a stack of 50, both taken with OM-1 and a 60mm macro lens stacked on a 2x TC. Last one a single shot taken with Sony A7RII with a 90mm macro lens.

Re: Rusty screw

I liked the 1st, I’d try and save it (the screw) with some wd40

... but then it would look less interesting, wouldn't it?

But of course you're right, after documenting its sorry state some oily help would be the right way to go.

Thanks for looking and for your comment!

Absolutely right. And sort of without much effort, as far as the actual picture taking goes. With the OM-1 it all seems to be even faster (just a feeling, no hard facts) compared to the E-M1 II I used before.

The speed and accuracy of the focus bracketing with this setup you invented really frees your mind for other things like composition, lighting etc. And that encourages me to simply try out more.

nice work!!

Glad you like it!

Re: Rusty screw

very nice,
tripod and flash?
how long did the whole process take? i.e. setup, taking the shots and the stacking in silico?

Tripod yes, but no flash but a Godox 170 LED light.

For the setup it's hard to say. I placed the secateurs on a router lift, put camera and the Godox LED light on tripods, looked for the right position/angle of the light (that's the most time consuming aspect IMO) and an additional hand held diffusor and then made the first stack. Took about quarter of an hour, I'd estimate.

As far as stacking is concerned I can be more precise, because I still have the source pics of the two stacks I posted here. So I looked at the EXIF data.

With stack #1 the first shot of 49 was taken at 20:01:02, the last one at 20:01:04 - so it took two to three seconds to take all 49. The pictures were taken at 1/30s each, so that fits the overall time. The stacked TIF - exported from Zerene after stacking - was created at 20:07:07. The processing in Zerene took about 2 and a half minute (just ran the stack again to check), so the rest of the time is handling the card, copying the files, importing them into Zerene etc. pp.

For Stack #2 I modified the setup and lighting (maybe another 5 to 10 minutes), took 100 pictures (but only used 70 of those); this took 18 seconds. The time difference explains itself because here the exposure time was 1/6s per picture.

After the stacked TIFs were created some further PP in Photoshop was done, don't know how much exactly.

That was probably more info than you wanted, but it was interesting to check, I have to say.

Re: Rusty screw

hi Phil,

Care to share your thoughts on the Godox 170 LED light?, eg is it (or similar led lights) any good?

i was looking at one £40 that needs 8 aa batteries, but other power options seem to be available but no details on where to get those (eg) a single rechargeable battery or external power

regards

If they are "any good" depends on your needs. I find them reliable and sturdy with a good, even light. I use mine with 8 rechargeable AA batteries (works very well indeed), but also have a external power supply if needed. Since it accepts anything from 6-12V input it shouldn't be too complicated to find one.

It also accepts standard Sony video rechargeable batteries like NP-F970 (and also probably the smaller ones with the same layout) that are also readily available.

All in all a versatile light, I have to say.

Thanks Phil, it seems to be working for you, as my last indoor stack with available natural light was 5 secs per shot I might be giving this a try
