Re: Which EF lenses worth keep

You need to check for firmware upgrades again. There are firmware upgrades available for most popular Tamron G1 & G2 lenses, for all R series bodies with I think the exception of the R5C.

Nope. That version 2.0 for 150-600 G2 is ages old. I suspect that so is the one for the first version.

What they advertise is the current situation. They don't tell anything about how old the update is for each lens.

I am moving to mirrorless. Which EF lenses did you keep?

I have the follow:

- 24-70 2.8 L (first version)

- 70-200 2.8 L (first version)

- 24mm 1.4 L

- 17-40mm 4.0 L

- Tamron 150-600mm

- 50mm 1.4

- 85mm 1.8

Thanks,

Ted

They are all good and you have a full lens lineup.  I'd keep them all.

What are you hoping to gain from mirrorless?

Thanks. Great input.

I may upgrade over many years, so it is good to keep in mind what I should replace eventually. The current set took me 15+ years to accumulate.

Re: Which EF lenses worth keep

The biggest reason is EF body and lenses are not getting new investment from Canon. Any technology gap will be wider and wider.

More specific reasons are new AF tracking in the R6 and R5 bodies, less weight both from the body and new lenses, faster electronic shutters. Video technology has the biggest gain, but it not a priority for me, since I don't do much video. It is a nice to have improvement.

I will certainly keep some EF lenses, because I also started on film and bought a used Canon EOS 3 body. So I will likely keep a smaller selection just for that.

Re: Which EF lenses worth keep

I plan to get full frame bodies. I will start with R6 Mark ii and wait for R5 Mark ii or iii, depends on how much money I can budget (or maximum amount before my wife screams at me).

I know some crop bodies are good, but I want to use RF lenses full potential. I started my DSLR with a 20D and moved to 5D mark iii. I don't want to move back.

I bought the adapter and fitted it to my R7 which converts my R7 into an EF mount camera so I have no need to change any lenses

At the same upgrade decision point.

Thanks for posting the question.  I’m pretty much in the same place camera-wise. I was heavy into stills starting in 2004 dual 580ex flash and studio lighting as hobby, and for my tutorial web site. I upgraded to 50D in 2008 but starting in 2012 after getting my first iPad3 with HD video camera and ability to edit on the same platform I switched almost entirely video.

I’ve been wanting to make the switch back to Canon to up my video game utilizing  my 10-22mm, 24-70 2.8 L and 70-200mm 2.8 L IS w. 2x extender but wanted to wait for a Canon to market a mid-range prosumer mirrorless body which would be “future proof” going forward.

I’ve started shooting of birds and other small animals have debated between the R7 + RF100-500mm or R6mkII + RF800mm f/11 and after watching many review videos have decided in the latter because it is better for video even though it will mean not using my beloved EF-S 10-22mm on the new camera.

I plan to get a Meinke  RF - ES adapter with filter so I can continue using my old EF lenses for stills and video and will retain the 50D for shooting with flash and ultra wide angle with my EF-S 10-22mm

Hi Ted,

Did you keep them all? BTW, how's the Tamron 150-600 AF performance with mirrorless? I have the 100-400/4.5-6.3 and I think the AF is slightly off with the R6MKII. It could be because I haven't updated to the new firmware released in Feb. 2019. So I ordered the Tap-in console to be able to do this.

Cheers,

José

Keep only the 24, 50 & 85 primes

No. Too old. Trinity zoom lens are the first type to be replaced.

- 70-200 2.8 L (first version)

No. Too old. Trinity zoom lens are the first type to be replaced. The original non-IS is not as good as the EF IS mk2, which is far surpassed by the RF 2.8.

- 24mm 1.4 L

Keep it until the RF version is available and reviews say it is better.

- 17-40mm 4.0 L

No. This is not even close to the 16-35 2.8L mk2 & mk3 in the trinity lineup.  I had this lens until I bought the 16-35 f4 IS, which is far better.  Now I have the RF 14-35 which is better and wider than the 16-35.

- Tamron 150-600mm

The RF 100-500L is much better. Besides, Tamron may be incompatible with future RF bodies.

- 50mm 1.4

Keep, as there is no equivalent 50mm RF lens, only cheapo 1.8 & expen$ive 1.2L.

- 85mm 1.8

Keep. From what I read, its IQ is slightly better than the RF f2, if you don't need 0.5X "macro" of the RF f2.

Re: Which EF lenses worth keep

I still have them all, but the Tamron 150-600 is likely the first to go, because I bought the RF 100-500L. And because of it, I did not try the 150-600 with the R6 ii. I also heard they are not as compatible as Canon lenses, so did not bother.

Re: Keep only the 24, 50 & 85 primes

Thanks. I already bought the 100-500L, so the Tamron is the first to go.

The 70-200 L 2.8 I have has IS. I don't know if that's call mark ii, since there is no such marking on it. This is the lens that I am struggle to make a call.

I think the next I will consider is between 24-70, 16-35 or may even go with a 24-105L f4 for travel. I won't replace the 70-200 until I have second RF body. I still keep using it on my 5D iv. Or I may even keep for my Canon EOS 3 film camera.

That will be the 70-200 F2.8L mk I (I own the mkII) and they work perfectly on a R series body with the EF-RF adapters.

You just like me will have to hang on to those EF lenses, I also still shoot with a couple of Eos 3's and a 1V (and 1N's as a backup)

85mm f1.8 is a keeper

I am definitely going to keep my EF 100mm f2, essentially same size and performance as your 85mm f1.8. It keeps the size and weight in place even with the adapter, AF is fast and the image quality is great.

For budget reasons I'll have to keep my Sigma 12-24 and canon 70-200 f2.8 IS, and I also have a Sigma 50mm f1.4 (non Art) that has noisy AF and has problems when setting auto exposure to full sensor, but it's optically better than the RF 50mm f1.8 so I'm going to stick to that for a while. You may want to check a comparison with your canon f1.4 and the RF 1.8 (if the RF 1.2 is not an option for you).

I just sold my EF 24-105 f4 to buy the RF equivalent, that's definitely the first RF lens I should mount since it's the most used and better in almost every aspect than my old trusty one. An RF 16mm f2.8 might follow.
