Adapted Nikon Lenses on X-H2/X-T5 and X-H2S

Hi everyone,

I'm a long time advanced amateur Nikon user with great interest in Fujifilm cameras, however, I have some lenses that I would not like to part with. Thus, I would greatly appreciate if you could share your experiences in adapting the lenses below (via Fringer adapter) on the X-H2/X-T5 and X-H2S regarding autofocus performance and image quality, particularly with the higher megapixel cameras (X-H2/X-T5). My emphasis is in portrait, travel, kid activities (8 year-old son) and close-up/macro. No BIF or sports. The lenses are:

* Sigma Art 15-35mm f/1.8

* Sigma DC 50-150mm f/2.8 OS

* Sigma DG 50mm f/1.4

* Nikon Micro 85mm f/2.8

* Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8

* Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm VR

* Nikon AF-P DX 18-55mm VR

Thank you very much in advance!

I bought the Fringer NF-FX to use my Sigma 18-35 Art f1.8 and Sigma Art 50-100 f1.8 on my Fuji X-S10.  I also have some Nikon f1.8 primes and the AF-P 70-300.  I am surprised how well it works.  I even tried a Nikon teleconverter and it worked with that.  I was not expecting it to work as well as it does.  Highly recommended if your Nikon F-mount lenses are on their list.  I think Morris0 uses it to mount a Nikon 500mm PF on his XH2s with great results.

Yes I'm very happy with the combination. The list of lenses verified compatible by Fringer is at this link when you scroll down:

Thank you very much for the reply! I am really happy to know that the Art 18-35mm works well. It is one of my favorite lenses.

Maoby, I have followed your camera comparisons with great interest. Could I make a suggestion/request?

What about testing a 24-26 MP Fujifilm and a 24 MP Nikon DX camera with the same Nikon lens adapted? I would be really curious about that...

I swapped Nikon to Fuji.  I sold my Nikon DSLR stuff.  Now I don't think it makes sense as the Z series of cameras are small and light compared with their DSLR brethren.

I like Fuji a lot but unless you can produce a really tangible reason to go to Fuji for me it no longer makes sense to swap for me at least.  I've had five years of lighter cameras and lenses and actually of course better lenses than my old Nikon stuff with one or two honourable exceptions, but that only applies if you are thinking of buying Fuji lenses as well.

I am happy with Fuji, esp. the new 40Mpix sensor but now I'd have gone for a Z series and an adaptor.  The Fringer adaptors get really good reviews for Nikon F and Canon EOS lenses, if you must!

The place that Fuji falls down is primes longer than 90mm. They make way too expensive 200mm f2.0 and that's it! I've filled that gap with a used Canon 200mm f2.8 L and Nikon 500mm f5.6 PF. Yes Fuji makes 3 nice zooms covering this range yet they're slower, thus not meeting the needs for subject separation and twilight shooting. Shorter than 90mm there are a huge number of choices.

Some people don't like to adopt lenses and Fuji is leaving all of these wildlife and sports photographers on the table.

Of course, my point was that a user with Nikon lenses and Nikon bodies needs a really good reason to contemplate a Fuji body and an adaptor.  I can think of reasons, but none that persuasive.

Have a conversation with the recent migrants from Nikon that photograph wildlife. They are dealing with the cost of the Z9 and the fact that all their old lenses need to be adapted to use on the Z9. Yes the native Z lenses are sweet yet so are the Native Fuji lenses.

It was the cost of the D850 that made me move; I could have afforded it, but it was simply beyond what I considered reasonable, more than I'd have felt good about spending.  I'm sure you are right for the sort of application you mention of course.  Anyhow the OP seems to have fairly pedestrian aims so I'm still intrigued as to why they are thinking of a Fuji body.

Thank you very much, and it's not over

And it's my intention in the weeks and less to come, to test Nikon and Fujifilm lenses.
I currently have a NIK(G)-FX manual adapter, that I bought at the time of my acquisition of the Fujifilm X-Pro1, and I have not yet tested it on my new X-T5

For me, I would particularly like to use the Nikkor AF-S VR 105mm f/2.8 G IF-ED as well as the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 DG HSM ART with the X-T5
etc…

Some of my reasons would be having IBIS in an advanced DX camera body. Some of my Sigma lenses do not work perfectly on  the Z series, particularly the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 DG, which does not autofocus. It seems to work very well with the Fringer adapter.

The higher MPix cameras interest me to do close up photography from a bigger distance to enhance the DOF and still keep high resolution after cropping for the final size.

I really like the advanced/professional DX bodies (D500/D7200) and, unfortunately, it is unclear if/unlikely that Nikon will ever produce them for the Z line.

Thus, If the lens compatibility is OK, Fujifilm X-H/X-H2?X-T5 are looking really attractive to me.

Re: Adapted Nikon Lenses on X-H2/X-T5 and X-H2S

I can't speak to Sigma lenses on a Fringer on a Fuji.  I can see that the 40Mpix sensor will put more pixels on a small sensor.  OTOH a X-H2 plus a Fringer is drifting towards the cost of a Z7ii.

I think it depends on what lenses you like. If you're shooting the new 1.4 primes and zooms like the 16-55, Nikon Z will be comparable size and the primes are actually cheaper.

My problem with Nikon Z is I can't go really small if I want to. They have the 28 and 40 compact lenses but that's about it. Now they're adding a pancake 26 when I'd like a 20 f2.8 or something. I also like the simplicity of the 18-300 for hiking and photographing bigger animals like big horn sheep. There are also random holes in the lens lineup like 70-300--the new Tamron isn't stabilized and has a terrible magnification ratio.

I'm going to Costa Rica soon and I think I'm going with quite the odd couple--Z9 with the 400 f4.5 (with 1.4x and 2x TC) and the XH2S and 70-300. I have an easier time getting focus on the Z9 with the multiple AF-On buttons than the Fuji, and I can be versatile with the TCs based on available light. The Fuji will be for random monkeys walking right up to me and 4k 120p video of hummingbirds.

The best native Z solution is probably the 100-400 which is heavy and a Z6 that doesn't do 4k 120p.

Nikon also uses different batteries for the Z9, Z6/7, and Z50 so I'd need a second charger even if I stayed full Nikon.

Re: Adapted Nikon Lenses on X-H2/X-T5 and X-H2S

I have an all manual Viltrox adaptor and it rotates on the locking pin a couple of degrees and it can also wobble on the mount. It drives me crazy. Is the Fringer tight fitting? One other question how are the firmware updates done?

It is hard for me to justify the expense of the adaptor when I only have six afs Nikkors and there are native fuji replacements that can be bought. The tanking of Nikkor lens prices also complicates this deal. Realistically those prices aren't going where they were in the past. My stabilzed 16-35 f4 is unique to Nikkor but it is a tank. lol
