l Just opened the Camera Connect app on my phone and it tells me that there is a new firmware and an option to download it. When the download is finished, it transfers it to the camera and tells me to continue the process on the camera. The camera is now displaying the update menu and I just have to select “update”. Cool! It can’t be much easier than that.

And yes, the startup with BT enabled is much quicker.

Also update here via de smartphone app, Canon has finally exited the '90s regarding the software update process for their camera's it appears.

And indeed, noticeably faster powering on with BT enabled

Does this work for the R6 v1 also?

Well the smartphone app was completely updated recently, so maybe? Best to test yourself.

I hate to be "That Guy", but honestly... starting a firmware update over a phone's Bluetooth/WiFi connection seems like the worst possible solution, IMO. Maybe they have an air-tight file checking system which ensures there are no copying errors (from the servers to the phone AND the phone to the camera), but that convenience just seems unnecessary to me. Updating firmware is not really a 100% safe thing to do. There is always a risk of corruption and failure, in which case, the camera would need to be flashed by Canon or the board replaced.

IMO, saving the file to the card media and inserting it into the camera just seems faster and safer (not including PC boot up time). IMO, this just seems like a solution in search of a problem. I am an IT guy and it is relatively rare to see a problem with firmware updates, but my experience will keep me from ever trying this.

The update is done from the memory card. The phone simply put the data on to it.

It's great.

Possibly but it's the same risk as from a card I think.

It's the same but the app tells me when a new versions is available, does the work for me.

I have no issues with this part, definitely a plus, but my take is, its just not worth the risk.

Also, is it really faster? Canon's file transfer system implementation is not as good as I would expect. All the transfer protocols seem woefully slow, the only exception is the downsized image file transfers to the phone from the camera. Those seem reasonably quick, even if compressed and downsized.

What is the added risk? Your camera updates from the one and same file on the memory card.

So added benefit no risk?

It downloads pretty quick.i don't have to hunt for the right file. I get told about the update. I don't need a laptop/pc with me or booted up.

Peace of mind, I get asked of I want a newer version and if I decide yes then it does it for me.

It doesn't speed up how long it takes the camera to actually update of course.

If folk don't wish to use it then great. We use a lot of WiFi image transfers so getting asked is part of the deal.

I don't see this as an added risk. More the opposite. I get the correct file, and the app and camera do the job for me. They are designed to work together. Less chance for me to mess things up.

I am not worried about this at all. It is great.

Does this update reset my camera back to factory settings, or are my custom settings and button mapping safe?
