Musings about the X100VI, probable april launch?
1

I really like the X100 cameras but after 3 years of the launch of the X100V and also given that new models are being released on a 3 year cycle, lets hope they can launch a new model this april 2023.

I don´t  care too much about megapixels, what I will like is a sensor based IS, the rest is already quite good for me, I think the current pricing and current models allow for IS sensor, not sure if Fuji will do it.

What are you expecting? Thanks!

If you search this forum you will find lots of speculation about a version VI, and whether it will appear in April.
I won’t comment on that.

But IF a new model does appear, any time this year or later, which includes IBIS, I do not expect the same RRP as the previous model. Currently £1349 in the U.K. but out of stock everywhere.
Why would Fujifilm do that?

I plan to order the X100 version 6 when announced...

but fear that Fujifilm seeing how popular the X100V is will raise the retail price.

However, the X100V will still be popular so I hope to sell mine to offset the cost.

Critical specs of X100VI : 23mm F2 lens
2

Critical specs of X100VI is lens, are 23mm F2 reworked? Are this 23mm F2 lens resolved 40MP BSI-CMOS sensor.

Are Fuji able provide constant small RAW feature. E.g. constant 16MP RAW regardless with/without crop mode. If full sensor read, oversampling to 16MP RAW.

Another critical: are UHS-I SD card enough fast for 40MP sensor?

I'm going to be the contrarian and push outside the box.  I would propose these changes....

Sensor stays at 26mp, BUT goes stacked.  Lower noise, faster processing, so biased towards quality at higher iso.  Most that are using the x100v aren't pushing the envelope to where more megapixels will benefit them. Also reduces temps for video use.

23mm f1.8 - combined with above, allows for greater use at a wider range of lighting conditions.

new processor, taking advantage of better AF system that's being rolled out.

flippy screen

better evf, slightly larger.

options to also do HEIF in addition to jpg.

Slightly move compact.

slightly better flash specs.

Use the same w235 battery as x-t5, longer usage, standardizing on it.

With the surging popularity of the X100 series, I wouldn't be surprised to see an entire new rangefinder added to the lineup. Something aimed more at hobbyists. Focal plane shutter, bayer sensor, 24-26MP, fixed lens, all the dials and style of the X100 series. It would be an entry point to the Fujifilm ecosystem to people still sitting out based on price.

The NP-W235 is about as wide as the X100V. How are they going to smash that thing in there?

Probably one of those that would like the X100 series to have a big grip. Fuji won't do it though...they know better.

My guess is it will be 40mp, will add IBIS and not much else.

Maybe an ever so slight gesture of a grip to make just enough room ;P

I think the X100v is one of the nicest looking camera on the market right now - I have no fixation for handgrips on that camera.  My speculation was on thinking there'd be room for that battery, but in the case that it's not feasible, then, that's low hanging fruit.  I did leave out the IBIS in the speculation.  I can't imagine that doesn't make it in the next update, unless there's some cost target that deems it too much to put in the recipe.

You said you wanted a "more compact" X100 but not really. To support the NP-W235 it would have to be quite a few MM thicker. The camera cannot be smaller or have paper-thin sides and still have a much bigger battery.

If they do go with NP-W235 it will be larger not "slightly more compact."

They would have to move the SD Card slot too.

The X100V has been a pleasure to use and I am not expecting more performance in such type of camera.

Most of all, I'd like a bigger and deeper viewfinder, as I wear glasses and can't use the camera for manual focusing all the time. It causes eye strain after a bit. But it's probably impossible to implement in such small body.

My second request would be to have a new lens that manual focuses mechanically instead of electronically. That would be so awesome...

AF-S precision could be better as well. It's more reliable than the X100F but still has room for improvement. Maybe it's a limitation of the lens itself though.

Gotcha.  I'll swap the battery as an item of speculation for IBIS instead

My guess video is going to be the next big improvement for the X100 line.

Ibis, add in a new design for an articulating screen, and great video specs, It will be a winner for everyone.

I’ve said this before, but I think the single biggest and most useful upgrade they could make to the X100 line is the 40mp sensor.

Why?  Because suddenly the fixed lens would be much less of a limitation.  You’d be able to crop in quite aggressively in camera using the “digital teleconverter” and still end up with very acceptable, high resolution images, that equal what previous gen cameras were serving up as standard.

CFExpress card can't fit into X100 compact body

Stacked sensor must pair with CFExpress card or internal storage (similar to smartphone 256GB storage) for high speed shooting.

Main issue is CFExpress card can't fit into X100 compact body.

All CFExpress card or internal storage has read/write cycles max limit. But, internal storage non-exchangeable.

Threaded, Thumbs up. Good post. I agree with you. Personally, I would prefer simply IBIS and improved lowlight performance. Not sure they could bump up to 40 and still do that.

Where did the "probable April launch" come from? I'm not on the Fuji rumor sites.

I was speculating a stacked sensor for the improved low light performance that's possible with a stacked sensor, and not predominately for the ability to burst.  It's my understanding there are other valuable benefits from a stacked sensor design beyond shooting at high rates, that can improve image quality itself.

XT5 in an X100V body, maybe with stabilization.

Agreed, but a stacked sensor also means you could remove the mechanical shutter assembly and instead add IBIS without the fear of rolling shutter as well as making one of the best cameras for street photography completely silent. The trade off would probably be not getting the burst rate or video specs of the X-H2s but it would be foolish for Fuji to make the next X100 a fixed lens version of the X-H2s since it would eat into that products sales.

23mm f1.8 - combined with above, allows for greater use at a wider range of lighting conditions.

Didn't the X100V get a new lens over the older models? The only way I see yet another new lens design is if they're moving to a 40mp sensor which wouldn't be stacked.

flippy screen

At most it should be the one from the X-E4, but having the X-E4 I hardly ever use that feature.

better evf, slightly larger.

Probably happening anyway due to the rumored supply chain issues they're having with the current one used in the X-Pro3 and X100V.

Slightly move compact.

Use the same w235 battery as x-t5, longer usage, standardizing on it.

A larger battery, more advanced processor, and flippy screen will always take up more space, and out of all of those things I'd rather have the better processor for a stacked sensor over a larger battery, and especially over a flippy screen.
