18-55 EF-S Variations Optically

There are quite a few versions of Canon's EF-S 18-55 lens. I have 3 of them for various Canons. Other than the later versions have IS, are there any real optical differences between them, especially when the megapixels kept going higher?

Optically the later STM version are the best in terms of Image quality. But autofocus speed, autofocus quietness and IS system is also better.  They also have the benefit of having a non-rotating front element, which is good for photographers who use polarizing filters.

If you want to see the difference in optical designs, you can head over to Canon's Lens Hall , and compare the different versions.
