Davinci Resolve 18- GPU Memory Full error - w/ solution

Maybe will help someone in the future or past.

Been running into a major problem with a timeline causing Davicini to repeatedly crash upon opening - sometimes offering to send error reports to the company. Other times remaining in memory.

My CPU is 8Core i7-10875H (8/16),2.30GHz base... GPU is Nvidia RTX 2080 Super with MAX-Q Design (laptop, with 8GB ram).  System main memory is 32GB, and I kept hitting 32GB during these crashes.

Saw the actual Davinci GPU Memory Error full one time out of - 30 crashes?

The timeline is only ~10 minutes, bunch of small clips, I have transitions between each clip - so I don't think I can combine the grades, so I copied each grade to each clip.

So nothing too complicated, right?  Bunch of screenshot overlays, titles and some music thrown in.

C:\ drive has 500GB free, so ...let's check out the pagefile in windows 10.

I figured system managed - but it was set to 8192KB (from what I recall).  And the way that reads - it's capped at 8GB.

Hmmm...  Let's custom set that to 8-64GB.

Bingo - GPU memory which is sharing with main memory - is behaving!

Main memory is hovering around 16 to 24GB ram.

50% of the way through, it's going to make it.

Resolve has crashed several times since last update (18.1.2) - starts to feel like Premiere Pro…

The general consensus is the Nvidia memory errors are a Nvidia driver problem. Are you using Studio drivers or the gaming drivers?

Some of the titles and transitions are really Fusion elements and that uses more memory.   With 32GB of RAM and 8GB of VRAM you're likely close to the limits with a 4K timeline. One trick is to use a FHD timeline and change it just before rendering.

My travel laptop is only 16GB of RAM and it has crashed with long timelines. My desktop with much more memory has been rock solid with all the v18.xxx versions.

It looks like game, not that I really game on it. Although I do have MS Flight Sim on here.

Sony Catalyst Browse will crash in performance mode, but compatibility mode works without issue. Although that always looked like the 8GB ram GPU was toast when it crashed, and not dipping into main memory.

Probably updated from windows updates...

The usual recommendation for Resolve is to use the Studio drivers rather than the game ready ones.  In theory they are more stable, although I'm a bit skeptical just how true that is.

If nothing else, if you use the Studio drivers and still have crashes then at least you'll have eliminated the troubleshooting step where people tell you "try the Studio drivers".
