Unflashy photography! Gen-Z'ers are dumping smartphones in favor of digital cameras from early 2000s because they love the blurry, over lit snaps they produce.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11610475/Gen-Zers-dumping-smartphones-digital-cameras-early-2000s-love-blurry-photos.html

""You remember the ones - the blurry photos, ugly metal camera frames with the wrist strap and the impossibility of instantly editing each photo to be Instagram-perfect.
That's exactly what's trending with the younger generation who are rebelling against the sleek, edited photos on their iPhones to seek out more authenticity in their pictures. "

"Tabarez finds digital cameras 'more exciting' than snapping photos on his smartphone."

"Sadie Grey Strosser, 22, also uses digital cameras to signify a different life stage and to capture the moment she feels 'so off the grid.' "

"More than 35 percent of teens have admitted to spending too much time on their phones, according to a Pew Research Center study, and some have taken it on their own will to distance themselves from the soul-sucking, mentally-depressing devices. "

Re: Off the grid

Growing up, every generation tries to “revolt” in some way and, soon enough, is confronted by the economic realities of holding a job and earning an income.

Fads come and go. Principles persist.

Ashley,

When I want to make a phone call, I use my phone. When I want to take a picture, I use my camera.

The thrust of the article is that Gen Zer's are beginning to turn away from the lifestyle that says that their identity is defined by their "soul-sucking, mentally-depressing devices".

They are beginning to turn away from the idea that their Facebooks, and their Twitters, and their Instagrams and TikTok's define who they are.

On the Photography Forums, I see people asking all the time if they should turn in their cameras for a Smartphone, and it makes me sad.

I personally would hate to see it.

For me, the act of taking a picture gives me the same satisfaction as driving a Jeep.

The journey IS the destination.

It's an end in and of itself.

Re: Off the grid

I'm the same way...I use my phone to call...most of the time use the camera for pictures.  But I have to say the cell phone is a convenient way to take pictures.  We have to also give the phone manufacturers credit for the innovations that they have made for photography.  I have observed at events that most people take pictures with their phones by a huge margin.  The phone manufacturers have done that right.

It's rumored that Apple may make a cell phone that we wear as glasses.  I suppose that we could take still and video pictures with that device (without anyone knowing).  There's also rumors that the pixel wars have not stopped and they could be increasingly a part of all cell phone and camera sensors.  People could use their "Apple Glasses" for one thing and their camera with interchangeable lenses for another thing.

That is a balanced and pragmatic view.

A camera is a camera. One can create interesting images with a phone camera or a small P&S camera. Also, one can struggle frustratingly with a high-end full-frame camera.

I use all sorts of cameras, including my iPhone 13 Pro’s cameras — yes, plural, 3 of them.

I'm the same. I use a little basic Nokia. While I can take photos with it, viewing them on my full HD monitor they display at about an inch wide... now that's what I call high IQ.

Joking aside, one does have to admit that smartphone cameras are getting better and better.
