using the phone app to create a focus stack
1

hi,

I posted this in the macro forum, but the discovery (for me anyway) of using the phone app to control focus thus allowing a stack to be created was very useful.

One of the annoying limitations of the m6ii means you cannot use the focus stack feature while using the flash, and I needed flash for what I was trying to do as natural light was non existent

I was able to choose my initial focus point, and then use the >> key to nudge focus further into the image and take another picture, repeat that till your stack is complete.

Its a tad slow, but its analogous to using a manual focus rail (if i had one)

It also means i wasn't touching / or nudging the camera between shots

Hope this helps

Jim

Hmmm.  Maybe an R isn’t an out of the question upgrade?  🤔

Since alignment is important for decent focus stacks, I always stack with a tripod.  I've not had good luck doing handheld stacks, especially for macro.

With a tripod, I've had natural light exposures as long as 1/4 second, 20 or so images stacked beautifully.  Let me know if you want to see an example.

hi ken, yes this was with a tripod, luckily the spider was resting, but the afternoon light was terrible hence i chose to use flash

I did a stack the other day with 80 shots at 6 secs each, it worked but I wandered off during the capture and after stacking I realised I wasnt happy with the pose... live & learn

R7 might be a "move across" path for me given my 2 most used lenses are ef-s, but while in camera stacking and better AF are tempting its a lot of £££s for mostly similar results
