If the camera chooses the shutter speed and aperture that could yield much different photos than what the photographer intended, especially at the longer focal lengths.

Yep. In both of the pictures I posted, the camera selected a lower f stop ( and consequently a faster shutter speed) than I would have chosen.

Just for the heck of it, the other day, I went outside on a nice sunny day, put my camera in Auto and took a landscape photo.

The camera selected f/5.6 as the aperture. It made me wonder why.

I think it's because the camera is automatically selecting the most wide open aperture available for a given focal length; and like you said, that may or may not be the look that you, as the photographer, is after.

"The camera selected f/5.6 as the aperture."

I was surprised yesterday when comparing the three versions of the EF-S 18-135; per DxO's results each of them reaches max resolution at f/5.6, significantly dropping at f/8.

That goes against everything I've seen from my EF and EF-S zooms. Perhaps my personal rule with them of staying between f/8 and f/11 is in error.

Really? That surprises me too.

Perhaps I oughta look at DxO's info for all my lenses.

I was just cautioned in another thread about overly heeding their results.

It's back to using the evidence of our own eyeballs, I'm afraid.

No, scratch that.

I went outside at around 2:00 PM (CST) with an 18-135mm IS USM lens set at 24mm.

I put the camera in Auto.

Depending on where I aimed my camera, the settings were jumping all over the place.

The sky, the ground, a dark corner. a white wall - the aperture ranged anywhere from f/5.0 to f/9.0.

I guess it just depends on how much light is falling on your sensor.

I love the blue sky and sunshine.  The bright colors are excellent too.  I use that lens all of the time on one of my cameras.  It's interesting that the leaves are turning yellow in the last photo, with a capture date of today.  Where were these taken?

Please ignore the dates — they were recorded earlier today when I took “screenshots” of the images on my iPad while reviewing them on Google Photos.

Those photos were created last year in late summer and late autumn, at locations between Montreal and Ottawa, Canada.

That “kit” zoom lens is excellent throughout the range — and sharp, open or stopped down, to my eyes anyway.

Oh cool...I figured that was the reason....

But I had to say something; otherwise you all might have thought that I had fallen asleep while viewing all of your pictures.  You all got to make sure that I'm paying attention. LOL

It's so nice to see those bright green leaves; everything looks so fresh and nice.  Right now where I live in Oregon the tree branches and moss (or lichen) are coming down due to all the wind and rain we are getting.  The deciduous trees are so bare.  I complain that it's cold, but the temperatures are above freezing.

Every once in a while, I'll look at my summer photos too.  I'm already looking forward to longer and warmer days as we progress through the early parts of 2023.  I'll probably go back to California to visit this summer again.  It's fun to plan trips.

Re: Love Canon Colors! Oly colors for Dunlin

That red color is nice.  My newer Canon DSLR cameras equally show that red really well.  This is a JPEG straight out of the camera.

I was looking at my older Canon T2i (550D) and Canon T3i (600D) camera pictures too. The red colors were pretty nice too, a little better than I thought.  I thought the red flowers didn't come out quite like I saw them, but it's been so long that I can't remember for sure.

Can you say “Kodachrome II” . That is what canon colors remind me of. Use to shoot a lot of  transparency film back in the late 60’s early 70’s. “Mama don’t take my Kodachrome away”

Took an early morning trip to USF botanical gardens. Recent cold snap beat up a lot of plants, but still plenty of life to be found.

It's nice to see the beautiful flowers and plants.  I see you are in Florida.  Enjoy the warm weather.

It has been snowing heavily today, and some brave souls were riding bicycles.

No flowers where I live.
