Female - Ommattius species with cock roach

I have seen very few robber flies in the last few years.  I was thrilled to see this one today with a beautiful cock roach Ellipsidion australe.

The Asilidae have feathered antenna.  This one is about three cm long.

It didn't move till I got up in it's face and took this photo.

That was too close for it and it flew away.

Nice timing, and lucky for one of the pair in the photo

great pics. really nice colours. These things can be dull or bright. I too have not seen as many of these in the last couple of years. I have many pics from a few years ago but not many from last year and so far no good photos from this spring/summer. But I have my eyes open. And macro lens with me most of the time
