How is the G1X III for street and people?
2

Happy New Year all!!! All the best for you and your families!

I am thinking about the G1X III as a small street and people camera. I have seen some photos in flickr and it seems to produce great photos for landscapes and street. How does it perform for people (at parties, gatherings etc)? How is the internal flash perform?

For portraits I understand its not the best, but what about more people shots or wider portraits for kids? For that role I now have the RX100VI which performs great outside in good weather but struggles in the house even with the flash some times.

Hi Yannis,

Sorry, time is super short but here are some quick thoughts.

I am in the fortunate situation to be able to try just about everything that comes out, and I have not used anything even remotely close the the G1X3 in terms of high-IQ, pro build, solid WR, and overall performance in a fixed-lens, pocketable size.

The swivel LCD makes a huge difference for both discrete street shooting (because it's dead simple to "aim here but shoot there") and family/kids/pets shooting (again especially using the LCD at "odd" angles.) I've touched upon all this in previous posts on this forum, a simple search should bring them up.

Oh yeah, the flash! It's surprisingly strong given its physical size, and you can shoot synced up to 1/2000 which is awesome, plus the fill flash, which I use all the time when the light is iffy, is incredibly good at doling out just whatever amount of extra light is needed, and nothing more. The only thing I would recommend is building a small white or silver reflector to place in front of the flash in order to redirect the light to the ceiling or to a wall when you shoot portraits or families indoors.

The only things I would love to have are a 20-60 lens (24 is barely wide enough for landscapes/street/people, 28/35/40 is definitely not wide enough) and a larger battery (luckily spares are very cheap) otherwise you're basically carrying a big D series in your pocket.

Very nice!

Incidentally, the G1X3 is light enough to be held with one hand and with a bit of practice it's quite easy to manually redirect the light by holding one's preferred reflector with one's left hand. This comes in handy in rooms with a tall ceiling, for example.

Hello Yannis. A blessed new year to you and your loved ones as well. The G1X III may not be the best for portraiture due to its "shorter" lens at telephoto and not so fast aperture at maximum focal length. In that respect, you can blur the background more with the 120mm max telephoto and f2.8 aperture of a G5X II for instance, despite the smaller sensor.
I myself got the G1X III instead of the G5X II for its form factor and weather resistance. It is my go to camera for hiking, casual photography on the streets. A great tool. Its leaf shutter permitting high speed flash syncs and built in ND filter gives great photography flexibility.

Happy New Year to you as well! I'm glad to hear that you are considering the Canon G1X III as a camera for street and people photography. From what I've seen, the G1X III produces excellent photos for landscapes and street scenes, with good detail, color, and dynamic range.

As for its performance for people photography, the G1X III is a versatile camera that can handle a wide range of situations. It has a 24-120mm (equivalent) zoom lens, which gives you a good range of focal lengths for portraits, group shots, and wider shots of kids and other subjects. The camera also has a pop-up flash, which can be useful for illuminating subjects in low light. While it may not be the best choice for serious portrait photography, the G1X III should be able to handle most people shots with ease.

In terms of indoor performance, the G1X III should be able to handle low light situations reasonably well, thanks to its large image sensor and fast lens. The built-in flash may not have the power or reach of a dedicated external flash unit, but it should be sufficient for illuminating small to medium-sized groups or individual subjects at close range.

The G1X Mark III has a 24-72 equivalent zoom lens. The G5X Mark II has a 24-120 range.

For the money I prefer the EOS M series with either 18-150mm lens or 55-200mm EF-M lens.

Even the G1X Mark ii is more appealing to me due to the longer reach and cheaper price.

Other models I'd prefer include the Panasonic TZ220 and Sony RX100 vii (all mainly due to longer reach).

The G1X III is fantastic for outdoors! But indoors? G5x mark II beats it, easy. I’ve owned both.

The G1X III needs a DIGICX refresh. The lack of RAW NR holds it back. An R10 or R8 when it comes out is recommended. Or perhaps an M200 + 22mm f/2 If you need something now.

I really like the ergonomics and a lot of other things about Canon compact cameras, but I like to use these small cameras quite a bit indoors, in natural light.

I've never found a compact, zoom lens camera that could hold a candle to the Sony RX100V or VA, when it comes to this type of casual photography, and I've never been able to understand why the Sony cameras are so much better than every other brand.

If Canon could improve their sensors, in this one area, they'd, once again, be king of the compact camera world.

Just the same, no small sensor camera with a long zoom lens is very good indoors. Their lenses are simply too slow, but with a good noise reduction program, like Topaz DeNoise, a lot of people perform miracles, even with these cameras.

Although I'd say I'm satisfied with my G1X III as a general use walk around compact camera, I'd sure like to see a Mark IV. Then again I wouldn't be able to afford it before long.

Yes, that's also what I've heard, so I think you're right, but if you use the DPR comparison tool and compare the G5xII you'll see that when it comes to JPEG images and low light ability the Sony RX100V is rated much higher.

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-powershot-g5-x-mark-ii-review/6

In fact, if you compare any of the Canon compact cameras (or Panasonic cameras) to the Sony RX100 cameras, the Sony cameras are rated quite a bit better when it comes to low light/higher ISO photography.  I've never understood why this is true.

Anyway, Canon does beat Sony in several other ways, including ergonomics, the menu, and I've always liked Canon colors better than Sony's.  I just wish they could do a better job with their low light/noise algorithms.

The RAW from my bit limited experience seems to be packed with information and is pretty clean for a small sensor compared to the Canon APS-C and FF sensors.
