SD1 Merrill at the last days of 2022

A happy new year to you all!

As some of you will remember, I've stopped with buying Sigma Cameras with my good old SD1 Merrill, for it has been the last 1:1:1 Foveon. I am still very happy with its color rendering, and as often as it is possible, I use it even for commercial jobs.

While patiently waiting for the words of Mr. Yamaki that the new FFF will arrive soon I'm out in the landscape with my SD1M. Here I want to show some of my every day-pictures made at the last days of 2022 while hiking with my wife. I'm living in the very south of Germany, but nearly always we are hiking in the Vogesen mountains, France, Elsass. Since many years we use to walk up to a mountain called "Petit Ballon" (1163 m) at Silvester day. This is always our last hike in the year at 31. December. Sometimes in heavy snow storms, at very strong cold – or at sunshine and heavy storm as that year.

I use to develop the .X3F with SPP, do some "optimizations" after own taste. No postprocessing. There is a dust spot in the middle of the sensor.

Leafs of digitalis and beech

It's very interesting, that the initially bright yellow leafes of the birche grow nearly black / anthracite during winter.

Some horses waiting for better weather in a shelter. The color rendering of the SD1M seem for me unsurpassable. I am convinced, that those fine hairs below the chin of the right horse can only depict a 1:1:1 Foveon, no other sensor technology.

The top of the mountain "Petit Ballon" (1163m) at bright weather.

A old drinking trough for cattle as b&w attempt right out of SPP.

Now I wish you a good 2023, health and imploringly peace...

Thank you Johannes for the beautiful set of images and a your discussion about beauty of shooting 1:1:1 Foveon cameras.  I mainly shoot the SD1 Merrill and on occasion the sd Quattro.  Lately, I have been shooting the Quattro on low resolution an getting a 1:1:1 result similar to the SD15 camera.  I too am waiting for the Sigma 1:1:1 full frame camera.

Have a health and happy 2023 and lots of good light!

The photographs and the narrative are wonderful!

Thank you for sharing and yes, i am also very positive and hopeful on the the new Sigma Full Frame sensor camera.

You stopped with the SD1...and i just could not move beyond the SD14 and the DP2s

A worthy upgrade is long due!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Those are truly beautiful photos and proof (as if we needed anymore) of the genius of Foveon.

I have gone back to film and have sold off my digital cameras...except for my Merrill. Can't seem to part with it, and, if the FF Foveon ever does get produced, I'll certainly buy one!

Many thanks to all of you for the words of appreciation! First and foremost, I certainly don't want to show particularly brilliant images, but simply bring back to mind the "kick" of the Foveon sensor. I hope it's just a matter of perseverance for the FFF (and us ;-)) . Let's hope that one day it will reach us. Also I am happy that there are still a lot of positive and patient people like you. Thanks!
@DCox: Do you plan to say anything more about the picture of the horses? I'd be very interested in that. It was a dull day with dull, bored horses. I didn't have a tripod with me. Although many of my pictures have failed because of "motion blurr", this time I was lucky. I wouldn't be able to get the color impression of that picture and e.g. the first picture with any of my other (bayer-)cameras.

Greetings again to everyone – even to India, if I see it right – and a good 2023!
