LP-E12 3rd party.

Looking for good 3rd party LP-E12 battery recommendations (for the m100/m200 / m50/m50ii). Just looking to save a few dollars on a few extra batteries, if possible. Amazon preferred? Thanks!

I've had great luck with the BESTON LP-E17 batteries (for my M6 and M6ii). They are "chipped," so they don't invoke the "battery questions" every time you turn the camera on.  They also show Battery Level Status on the camera display.

I don't know the particulars of the LP-E12 version though.

I started using Wasabi LP-E12 batteries when the original M was introduced and have used Wasabi with M2 and M50.  I have 10-12 Wasabi batteries and have experienced only one failure and it was promptly replaced by Wasabi.  I think they sent me 2 batteries to replace the one failure - great customer service.

LP-E12 is not a chipped battery, so pretty much anything will work.

Re: LP-E12 3rd party.

I have bought 2 Wasabi LP-E12 batteries in 2018 for my M50. (costs $17 for a set of 2,or $23 with an additional charger)

They served me well until one of them swelled.

Them, I replaced it with a BM Premium LP-E12 battery in early 2021.(a set of 2 is $18 on Amazon).

Now, the other Wasabi battery has swollen too.

So, now, I am using the original Canon battery and a BM Premium battery.

Thx.  In that case the other batts that I’ve had no issues with also include Wasabi, Neewer, Hahnel, BM Premium, RAVPower, Photive, PowerExtra, Kastar, Batmax, and the various OEM.  No problems.  Some did only hold about 80% of the charge that the genuine OEM batts did, but that’s about par for the course.

Re: LP-E12 3rd party.

I bought the "Wasabi Power LP-E17 Battery (2-Pack) and Dual USB Charger" from Amazon but rarely use those batteries.

I like to charge in the camera (u can do that with 'Nekteck 60W USB C Charger [GaN Tech], PD 3.0 Fast Charger[USB-IF & ETL Certified] with Foldable Plug,") and a real Canon battery.  The Wasabi batteries only recharge in their own little charger

Re: LP-E12 3rd party.

I have 4  canon brand lp-e12 batteries. one in each of 3 cameras and one extra. I have also bought  the Wasabi 2battery deal  with a 2 slot charger for around $25 .. I will only use the wasabi batteries in an emergency situation and only keep it in my cameras  until the canon battery is recharged. They have exhibited no different behavior than the genuine canon batteries but  I don't trust 3rd party batteries  to the point where I am comfortable with them in my cameras for any extended periods.

None of the LP-E12 powered cameras support USB charging.

People keep mixing up LP-E12 and LP-E17 batteries in this discussion.  The LP-E17 batteries are "chipped".  Earlier generation LP-E17 clones did not have the appropriate chip and would not be recognized by the Canon OEM charger and would also throw up error messages in the camera about not being genuine Canon.  These third party LP-E17 batteries would only charge in the accompanying third party charger.

LP-E12 batteries are unchipped and have no such issues.  Any LP-E12 battery from any manufacturer will work in any LP-E12 charger from any manufacturer.  Any LP-E12 battery from any manufacturer should work without error messages in any LP-E12 camera.

Actually everybody seems to be offering up info about any/all of their batteries and manufacturers (not just the LP-E12).  It's good to know of any issues related to any batteries I think!  (Like Wasabis swelling, etc).

aaaarrrrteee's problems are specific to the LP-E17 battery and not to Wasabi, which lead to Advi's response.  Some newer LP-E17 batteries are now properly chipped, but when the LP-E17 launched with the M3, all third party LP-E17 batteries were incompatible with the Canon charger, threw up error messages in the camera, and would not display a proper charge status.

Swelling batteries would be a reason to avoid a manufacturer.  LP-E17 batteries not charging in a Canon charger is not a reason to avoid a manufacturer as it is a problem specific to the LP-E17 and would not affect the LP-E12.

Most companies don't actually make their own batteries, including the OEM's. They just subcontract the job to an outside manufacturer and then slap their label on the outside of the case. That is not to say that there are not quality differences between batteries. There are differences, but outside of the OEM's, it is pretty difficult to judge based on name alone.

Just buy whatever is cheapest and has reasonably decent reviews. Prices should be around $20 for a 2 pack of batteries with a charger.  Worst case, one of the batteries swells and you are out about $10.  Since none of the LP-E12 powered cameras support USB charging, the odds of the battery swelling inside the camera are nearly zero.  Just dispose of the bad battery and buy another 2-pack. Even if half of the third party batteries were bad, you would still be ahead of buying a single LP-E12 from Canon.

I can recommend Kastar batteries, sold on Amazon, without reservation. I've used several of them over quite a few years. I encountered one new Kastar LPE12 that for some reason wouldn't charge a second time in a Canon charger. First time, no problem; second time, no go. I notified the seller, who like me had no idea why that would happen but rushed a dual third-party charger to me at no charge. Before that arrived, I located a third-party charger I already had, and the battery charged in that with no problem. I appreciate that quality of customer care. I neither had asked for nor expected him to send me another charger.

Back in the early days of Li-ion batteries, I had one swell. It was a Samsung battery that came inside a used Samsung video camera. I discovered the problem a couple of months after buying the camera. I was just able to get the battery out without damaging it or the camera.  A few years later I had an off-brand battery that, after a half-dozen recharges, started dropping capacity rapidly. I don't know why, but when it went down to half spent after only about 20 exposures, I discarded it. I can't recall the brand, but I'm sure it wasn't Kastar, Wasabi or BM.
